Then there was The Wiener and Still Champion, on Dempster, which had the best name for any hot dog joint. And finally, there was Hot Dog Island, which was literally ON an island...a small patch of land where three streets intersected (Crawford, Central, and Gross Point).

Better than any of them was the Skokie joint that stood just east of the Yellow Line terminal. Can't recall its name. And there's Herm's, about two miles east, also on Dempster. When we were in high school (early 60s), my buddy worked there, and Herm himself (now long gone) told him to "stack the sugar cones"...so he took them out of their boxes and literally STACKED them into a giant pyramid. He was fired. But the dogs he served up were very, very good.

Cleveland isn't really known for its hot dogs, but we do have something bigger and more juicy--it's called a Polish Boy.Grizz 65https://www.blogger.com/profile/02892702223228764894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-82277681801991882572019-07-12T23:27:54.017-05:002019-07-12T23:27:54.017-05:00Best's Kosher was the most unique hot dog unti...Best's Kosher was the most unique hot dog until Sara Lee pulled it.Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04605155217533175936noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-68252995725312974012019-07-12T17:12:14.182-05:002019-07-12T17:12:14.182-05:00Thanks for this sweet rerun, if only for finding o...Thanks for this sweet rerun, if only for finding out that U.B. Driving a hack, I'm taking two New Yorkers from Rosemont to Gene&Georghettis downtown. Traffic backed up and slow at Harlem, I joke that the worlds best hotdog is a couple of exits ahead. Nearing Nagle, they ask me how far to the Dawgs. This exit I say, "take it" I'm told. Four Superdawgs later, one guy had seconds, they admitted that I had not oversold the product. I don't like raw onions so I never really have the classic Chicago Dog, but I had a revelation at a golf course 19th hole sometime ago. Their condiments were meager and I chose mustard, relish and hot giardenaria. Fantastic. But ketchup, Neil? I've never seen a person over 8 years old put ketchup on a bologna sandwich, which is basically a fatter sliced hot dog on bread. Of course mayo commonly accompanies cold cuts and I wouldn't consider it a proper dog garnish. Only proving, never take culinary advice from an Irishman.JPhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08613528527379198505noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-75005339101032481382019-07-12T10:22:28.452-05:002019-07-12T10:22:28.452-05:00Ketchup, mustard, and onion.

Their cod dinner, however, which usually serves as 2 meals for me, has to be the best (and cheapest) dinner one can order and receive within 10 minutes. They also provide the usual overloaded Italian Beef, Italian Sausage, Polish Sausage. shrimp dinners, Greek salads, etc. and great French fries (without salt of course). One of these days, I'll try their hot dogs even if it pisses my cardiologist off.

johntatehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10088632798195131329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-27813532104968438802019-07-12T07:54:57.156-05:002019-07-12T07:54:57.156-05:00A vice-president of Toyota came to the U.S. some y...A vice-president of Toyota came to the U.S. some years back and went on a series of interviews with Toyota owners. My husband somehow got picked and a whole entourage showed up at our house to ask him things like what he used a particular compartment in the door for and to have him demonstrate how he got in and out of the car. They had just come from lunch at Gene & Jude's.
