I realize that this is nitpicky, but since ...Neil,<br /><br />I realize that this is nitpicky, but since this piece was a demonstration of "why you’ve got to love history," I think it's at least worth a quick mention. Did you notice the 2 comments following this column on the S-T website? They point out that the first U. S. capital was in New York City, and that that's where Washington lived in 1790. Thus, "Washington’s New Year’s receptions were in Philadelphia, of course, where the capital of the country initially was located." is not completely true, especially the "initially" part. Obviously, this can't be changed in the paper, so maybe you feel that the ship has sailed. I'm just wondering if you saw the comments, neither of which -- to be clear -- were made by me! Regarding history, I find it valuable as well for its insights. At least, it can help one avoid making the same stupid mistakes they did in the past.
