That certainly seems to be the case regarding sexual matters. As Gary Wills had pointed out in a number of articles, there is little if any scriptural justification for a celibate priesthood and the ban on contraception. Or prohibiting abortion for that matter.

Tom EvansAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-12035239733549378232015-09-28T09:37:59.132-05:002015-09-28T09:37:59.132-05:00On the other hand, it afforded a relatively Trump-...On the other hand, it afforded a relatively Trump-less media week. One could be cynical and believe with Napoleon that "religion is a great thing for keeping the people quiet," or Stalin, who asked how many divisions the Pope had. However, this Pope does seem to be pressing some humanistic levers, even though his Church is a profoundly retrograde institution. I'm inclined to go along with Neil's gut and believe the visit was not just a feel good waste of time. But change will indeed be slow.

Did Ted Cruz really say that? The first few minutes of his speech to Congress, which I listened to on my way to the doctor, struck me as platitudinous and banal. However, he apparently made a stronger impression later. I think it's amazing that he dares to confront politicians with realities they're adept in avoiding or denying. I'm afraid that the lasting effects of his speech will be that Catholics don't have to agree with the Pope on most matters. The infallibility doctrine covers only faith and morals. Who's to judge what falls under those rubrics...if he doesn't?

john tatehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10088632798195131329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-48437750878924858722015-09-28T00:26:42.552-05:002015-09-28T00:26:42.552-05:00"...having the head of the Catholic Church st..."...having the head of the Catholic Church start focusing on the fate of the planet instead of what goes on in its bedrooms can't be a bad thing." Perhaps not, but a change in focus on what goes on in bedrooms with regard to contraception is probably the single biggest thing that the Pope could do, himself, to positively affect the fate of the planet when it comes to global warming, as well as some other global problems.Jakashnoreply@blogger.com
