It's so much bigger and better and more photogenic now.

Back in the day, the layout exclusively featured the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF), now the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF). All the model train rolling stock sported te Santa Fe livery (colors) of red, silver, and orange, and included the Super Chief passenger trains and other cross-country Santa Fe passenger trains. Many colorful freight cars as well, including the orange refrigerated boxcars ("reefers") that carried California's produce to the East.

The original layout was designed to represent the topography one would find along the Santa Fe routes, which covered the western two-thirds of the country, between California and Chicago. The Loop buildings and the 'L' trains and the commuter trains came along much later. As a "juicehead" (electric rapid transit junkie), I particularly enjoy seeing the elevated structures and the CTA cars.Grizz 65https://www.blogger.com/profile/02892702223228764894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-22064785989095709072021-01-12T14:46:38.113-06:002021-01-12T14:46:38.113-06:00Another marvelous foray into the unknown knowns. ...Another marvelous foray into the unknown knowns. I forwarded today's blog to my great grandson in Indiana, who was thrilled by the exhibit when we saw it together a few years ago. His mother is one of those brave souls battling Covid during the day and spousal ignorance at night. And she is gratified that her son at age 12 is talking about working for NASA or in engineering of some sort. Trains, big or little, might work too.

john
tatehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10088632798195131329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-10210224857616824142021-01-12T13:19:06.864-06:002021-01-12T13:19:06.864-06:00Nay, keep his sweaty little orange paws away from ...Nay, keep his sweaty little orange paws away from them!heydavehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15509102502417886790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-51481764993863107752021-01-12T13:18:10.206-06:002021-01-12T13:18:10.206-06:00Personally, no further persuasion needed; this man...Personally, no further persuasion needed; this man has THE dream job!heydavehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15509102502417886790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-55227947891300265772021-01-12T11:32:15.565-06:002021-01-12T11:32:15.565-06:00How cool. Had to wait quite a few years before I saw it for real. There seems to something about those things, I William describes it well. There is someone who will be looking for work after the 20th, a train set would be a good gift/hobby to keep him busy.Connellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18406704590565406630noreply@blogger.com
