You have brought much to the EGD table since your arrival here. And yes, I finally found a therapist about twenty years ago who helped me to better understand my family dynamics. Could have been far more successful, but that was probably more my fault than his. It's all ancient history now...a lot of water under a lot of bridges, too many of which I burned. Clearly, to your immense credit, you've survived (and hopefully thrived) despite such a dreadful start in life.Baruchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04272846864527724702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-28877529329346906822020-06-20T14:49:29.651-05:002020-06-20T14:49:29.651-05:00Every year, as Father’s Day approaches, I remember...Every year, as Father’s Day approaches, I remember the many times I spent two hours at Walgreen's, looking for the "right card"—-but I never found it. I always tried to find one that was simple and straightforward and NOT mushy... without rhymes or verse...those are SO trite and tacky and awful.

But everything on the rack was either rhyming or silly...or both...until maybe a couple of decades ago. Hence the long search every year. There were very few appropriate cards for someone in my situation.

I needed to find one that said "You're an obnoxious bastard and I have never really liked you very much, let alone loved you. But it's your day and I want to do the right thing and play the game, so here's a card that isn't too silly and isn't too sickeningly sweet, from your only son. Enjoy, even if this is just a meaningless ritual and an empty gesture. Have a nice day, Pops." It would take a LONG time to find one of those.

No need to get into the physical, verbal, and emotional abuse...or the enslavement of his wife, or the molesting of his daughter. When people die, most are not soon forgotten. My father was, though, even by those who lived with him and who were closest to him. At his funeral, there wasn’t a wet eye in the house.

For 55 years, I had a father. But I never really had a dad. And now, all these years later, it's just another Sunday in June.

Enjoy your beautiful memories, Caren, and treasure them, and be grateful and thankful for having a father like Tony.
Grizz 65https://www.blogger.com/profile/02892702223228764894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-56062163812367046812020-06-20T10:42:04.064-05:002020-06-20T10:42:04.064-05:00Haha! Your words ring of truth and flesh out someone I realize I am just beginning to know. Tony's thoughtfulness is legendary and the jokes he has been sending throughout the pandemic have been a tonic for me. Why haven't I told him that yet?
