| "From Jerusalem," by John Singer Sargent (Metropolitan Museum of Art) |
I hate to pile on Macklemore, the rapper recently yanked from Ed Sheeran's tour, further muddying his reputation by association. But I kinda like him, primarily for his song "Starting Over," an explicit look at sobriety and relapse. I did smile at first listen, because he presents himself as "some wise monk" and a big famous celebrity, since I'd both never heard of him before and — to me anyway — there is something limp and ersatz about white rappers, though Eminem seems to do OK.
I paused before using the present tense, "I like him" in the opening paragraph. I still like Macklemore, based entirely on that song, despite the controversy over his remarks related to Palestinians. Then again, I have an oddball view on this subject, one perhaps unique to myself — I see it as a highly emotional issue, where people of goodwill believe deeply across the spectrum. So I don't feel the need to flutter my fingers at my sternum and gasp whenever someone says something I disagree with. I certainly don't see how stifling anybody helps. I would no sooner want to see Macklemore silenced than I would want to be silenced myself.
I also thought before I used "related to Palestinians" rather than "pro-Palestinian" because I don't quite understand how shouting "Free Palestine" in various circumstances, whether from a concert stage, or at random Jews going about their business in the street, is actually helpful to Palestinians. I wouldn't shout "Down with Trump!" at someone wearing a cross because evangelicals tend to back the president. Macklemore-like outbursts certainly don't relieve an iota of suffering in Gaza, or get any closer to a solution to this intractable problem. Maybe it helps the person shouting, giving themselves a big wet kiss of virtue signaling.
And yes, I know that beside his "Free Palestine" remarks, Macklemore also once went onstage wearing a false Jewish hooked nose and beard. I wear something similar myself, permanently affixed to my face, everywhere I go, so heck, the more the merrier. Mel Brooks once dressed as Hitler and performed a rap song — that isn't an endorsement.
We are allowed to tune him out. I deleted both Instagram and Facebook off my phone because I was tired of the endless "Punch & Judy Show" on this subject. Everybody's talking, nobody's listening. If I could inject a thought into the slipstream — and I guess I can, through the vehicle of a newspaper column, which isn't quite writing a broadsheet with a quill pen and pasting it to the post office wall, but close — I would point out, to Jews, that the true peril is not from tertiary musicians making earnest speeches, but the U.S. government using your cause to squash free expression. I care about Israel, but care 10 times more about this country, and since there is a risk of Jews being eventually seen as the folks who hurrahed Donald Trump while he ravaged the Constitution, I want to add an emphatic: Not In Our Name.
As to Palestinians and their supporters, well, I would point out that being the darlings of Hollywood and college sophomores did not help Tibetans, still under the heel of China last time I looked. If your point is that Israel should never have been created in 1948, I can understand that. But it's still there, your feelings notwithstanding. The relevant question is: What happens next?

Good column. It isn't an easy question.
ReplyDeleteIt's one thing when Mel Brooks is made up as Hitler or even better, when Tom Dugan opens the brilliant satire of Ernst Lubitsch's "To Be Or Not To Be" from 1942 looking exactly like Hitler walking around early 1939 Poland. They were making fun of him, as so many have over the decades.
ReplyDeleteBut when that asshole Macklemore came out in the hooked nose & beard, he was echoing the Nazis in their propaganda against Jews, because that was the images they always used.
There is absolutely no doubt he is & always has been a vile anti-Semite!
Agree with Clark St.
DeleteSo? Does that mean he should sit down and shut up? Perhaps he should, but should Jack Benny have shut up in 1942. No doubt "To Be or Not to Be" ticked off more than a few people back then.
Deletetate
He doesn't have to shut up, but the artist he was opening for doesn't have to employ him to spout his idiocy, rather than his music. There are consequences for idiocy. He can spout off on his own time and money.
DeleteThanks, Neil.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate, and like this piece.
I am listening to what you say. Many good points
ReplyDeleteI tend not to listen to people like Macklemore . I listen to what the people with power say the people who are in control of that circumstance. They are not nearly as sensible as you. They lie and manipulate the events that occur in this region.
Since before I was born violence and warfare have been occurring regularly on many fronts of this conflict.
I think your suggestion includes the idea that they listen to one another and there's not a lot of that going on.
Put this one in the Pulitzer file. A couple more like this one, and you're a shoo-in.
ReplyDeleteMy internal remote clicked off just eight words in...at "rapper." Sorry, Mister S.

Yeah, I would, if I gave a rat's ass. Rap, hip-hop, techno-pop-indie-house...none of that...or the people who perform it and produce it...means jackshit to me.
DeleteOf course not, Grizz. You're old. What puzzles me is why you're so proud of not caring. Belligerent ignorance is not really welcome around here, no matter who expresses it. You don't care about the topic of today, fine. I don't care that you don't care. Now we're even.
DeleteI almost let grizz have the same retort then thought better of it. Imagined you wouldn't let it through. He seems to have special status here about.
DeleteI hope 2 months recovering from surgery for your injured shoulder hasn't ground your gears to badly.
Have you returned to function yet? 50% ? still restricted in your activity? No lingering discomfort? Complications.? You don't say much about it. Hope it's going well. And the new book? How's that coming along?
Had a bad reaction to anesthesia after outpatient surgery the other day, and ended up in the ER. With another trip to the same hospital yesterday. Yes, I'm old. That's a given. And this unexpected surprise was like a kick in the crotch, and made me feel ten years older.
DeleteDid not intend to sound uncaring about the Middle East situation. It was about rap and rappers, regardless of ethnicity. Hearing them has always felt like I'm chewing on tin foil. Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.
Sorry to hear about that Grizz. And sorry to use the o-word. But your reaction, "BOR-ing!" just gets under my skin, because my job is to make people interested in stuff they aren't actually interested in, so if I failed to do that, in your case, I didn't do my job. I don't care about rappers either, generally. But they were a way into a topic that I don't get to write about much. As for FME's question, I'm easily at 50 percent, maybe 65 percent. I have trouble doing certain things — getting out of cars, I discovered big time yesterday, driving 320 miles, roundtrip, to go downtstate. No complications, but a lot of physical therapy. The book is going gangbusters, though I wish I had more time to work on it.
DeleteThe drug they give you for cataract surgery is supposed to dry up your eye, I suppose, so it can be operated on, But it dries up everything else, like your mouth, and in my case, my bladder.
DeleteSimply put--couldn't whiz. Not only extremely serious, but dangerous, and excruciatingly painful as well. Not the best time for a long car ride.
Fortunately, I'm only a mile from a big Cleveland Clinic facility...and my urologist. Will spare everyone the details. Had a bad couple of days, but I was okay by yesterday. This may have been a glimpse into the future. Past eighty, the road is short and rocky. That milepost lies just ahead..
Didn't think all that would go through, either, FME, and was a bit surprised to see it. Posting it was at his discretion, as the last line says every goddamn day. Special status? Just do my best not to piss off our proprietor, but sometimes fail. His house, his rules.
It was the second swing. Remember, you said it twice. The first one I granted you. The second one I felt entitled to push back. Lots of stuff doesn’t interest me, but I don’t leap onto Blackhawks chat boards, denigrating hockey.
DeleteThat happens at Cub pages. Bandwagon jumpers leap on board and whine about losses, chokes, and bad decisions. Old whines in new bottles. Whine, whine, whine...pass that jug to me.
DeleteMost of them are younger, and haven't lived through all the decades of pain and sadness. Ripped some of them new orifices. So guess who got the boot?
No loss. Plenty of other and better pages out there, for Cubsessed die-hards.
Not a fan of Ed Sheeran and until this kerfuffle I'd never heard of Macklemore.
ReplyDeleteAhh...that's the real question, isn't it? What to do now? Harms committed on both sides, fresh or aged, won't fit back in the toothpaste tube, so now what? Wait, what's that you're saying to me? I have to sit down with someone who's absolutely on the other side of the issue and engage in good faith discussion, one that's free if emotional outbursts and using only the facts of the situation? How dare you!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you are familiar with this fellow...actor and comedian Tom Walker playing a reporter named Jonathon Pie. I first found him about 10 years ago when a clip made the rounds that was advertised as a British reporter doing a live shot from Parliament in the rain losing it and going on a rant about how he really feels. Many, including me, thought it was real.
This clip has stuck with me since November of 2016. It's not the Trump winning part...it's the parts that relate to the hard questions in your column. I am absolutely guilty of a lot of the truth in this clip and have been trying to be better about genuine engagement.
1:33, 2:44, 3:45, in particular at 5:40...if 6:12 is too long, go to 5:40.

It's a quagmire, isn't it? Why Jew and Palestinian cannot live side by side in peace and share the land, share the government and share the air they breathe is a question I am not wise enough to answer. And wishing won't make it so. I have no idea how this can resolve peacefully. And it's a goddamned shame.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for Sheeran. All his opening acts dried up. I tend not to respect opinions from singers or actors, etc.
ReplyDeleteSheeran has a nice sound. Some here should give it a chance. Just go to youtube.
ReplyDeleteEverybody and I mean everybody that comments on this thread should look at that video. This is what you allow to happen here Mr Steinberg this is what's happening everywhere and this is what we got and we're not going to be able to get rid of it if we keep doing this same stupid s*** watch this video
