Originally I began the post...Sorry about that Eric. Originally I began the post with the definition of anthropomorphism. But that seemed, oh, bloodless, and looking at my central directive as a writer ("You've got to put the slop where the pigs can get at it," I decided to go with my initial impression seeing the cat on the dresser. Though that technique is dangerous. When the paper put Mary Mitchell aboard the last flight of the Concorde, I felt so left out I wrote a column whose first few graphs imagined me sitting aboard the flight, sucking the sugar coating off of cashews in First Class. The people who expressed amazement, I knew, had bailed out of the column early on. I imagine the same thing will happen here.Neil Steinberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11468057838260476480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-54870444562676860162014-11-04T08:33:40.740-06:002014-11-04T08:33:40.740-06:00Gertrude Stein, with a nod to Rene Descartes, once...Gertrude Stein, with a nod to Rene Descartes, once wrote, "I am because my little dog knows me."

Having had to "put down" a number of beloved pets I was comforted by recent comments of an animal behaviorist criticizing people who subject terminally ill animals to needless medical torture by imputing to them human feelings and sentiments. Animals fear pain, he said, but live in the moment and have no concept of death.

Must go and vote now, hoping against hope. Even if the rich guy hadn't been mean to all those old ladies in retirement homes, I would be inclined to stand with the Sansculottes on the Sun-Times staff in opposition to him.Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09641357239788323783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-70417221620099340102014-11-04T08:29:50.454-06:002014-11-04T08:29:50.454-06:00You gave me quite a start there, Neil, in your ope...You gave me quite a start there, Neil, in your opening four paragraphs. I was prepared to send you this link http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_columnists_ezorn/2009/05/your-dog-does-not-love-you-and-other-cold-nosed-truths.html to a column I wrote explaining to dog people (and I, too, am one) why, no, their dogs don't love them. One of the least popular columns I've ever written! The truth, she hurts.
Tell your readers to tune in to WBEZ FM 91.5 tonight at 9 p.m. to hear us offer our decidedly rebarbative opinions on the election results.Eric Zornhttp://chicagotribune.com/zornnoreply@blogger.com
