To this day, I can't tie a tie without standing in front of a mirror; my father assured me that he couldn't either. At college graduation, it transpired that I was the only guy in the house who could tie a tie, so I had to tie everyone else's by tying it on myself, take it off by slacking the knot, and giving it to each prospective graduate.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-5050038508541318502014-06-30T09:53:53.681-05:002014-06-30T09:53:53.681-05:00Sorry if this goes through twice...

I can pinpoint that age because instructions from tie-a-tie.net remain taped inside my closet door. Today, at 36, I can tie a necktie quickly and with good results. I just can’t muster the energy to pull those loosely taped instructions off that closet door.

As a younger man I had to rely on my father for occasions that required a tie. The discomfort of wearing those ties equaled the feeling of asking my old man for any kind of help. He was a remarkably difficult guy. We never got along. Asking him to tie my tie probably feels like asking a stranger for money.

My father passed away in the summer of 2000, a few months shy of his 57th birthday. In the days leading up to his death I remember giving thought to what I’d do about a tie for the funeral. When that moment finally came all I could think to do was sheepishly ask an uncle for help. Strangely I remember little else about the day.

I haven’t worn that funeral tie in fourteen years. I’ll probably never wear it again. And yet, like those loosely taped instructions, it manages to hold a place in my closet.

Perhaps we should trade – my funeral for your purple and yellow. The more he tried to think of the correct way, the more he fumbled it.
