If you hear a bunch of old Greeks grumbling about how the mavri ruined the neighborhood, you'll know what they mean.Bitter Scribehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04645909858616987997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-32090676723081389852020-01-16T12:39:33.501-06:002020-01-16T12:39:33.501-06:00While Pete is no longer Mayor of South Bend. To me, it's absurd that someone would pretend to be gay. Whether it happens or not, I doubt that it rises to a substantial social problem or would do so should favoring gay businesses provide an incentive. I think Barack Obama was wise to try to avoid the appearance of favoring black Americans. Unfortunately, it didn't work. So far, LIghtfoot has shown a lot of courage and political ability. It doesn't seem likely that she will need to make unseemly alliances with the powers that be in order to get things done. I certainly hope she doesn't do so.

johntatehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06215684866966011198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-11840410348675063702020-01-16T05:31:39.508-06:002020-01-16T05:31:39.508-06:00Sadly, some of the most prejudiced people I grew u...Sadly, some of the most prejudiced people I grew up with were from my own tribe. Jews have suffered terribly for many centuries, and have greatly aided the causes of blacks and other minorities, but some are unapologetic bigots. My father's older brother had no qualms about being a South Side slumlord who hid his real estate transactions by putting them in his wife's name, and while the n-word was strictly taboo from childhhood on, the S-word was not.

For the uninitiated, the S is for "schvartse"...which means "black" in both Yiddish and German. It is a pejorative nonetheless. In those days, "black" was still a racial slur, and a fighting word. The S-word was (and still is) not quite as nasty as the n-word, but far more derogatory than the term most commonly used in those times--the c-word, which of course stood for "colored." I grew up routinely hearing both of them, and the S-word was freqently used right into my teen years...and beyond...by Jews who knew better and who championed civil rights and other liberal causes. Sadly, I was among them.

My uncles (and other relatives) didn't think twice about hiring blacks for the most menial jobs, and paid them as little as they could get away with. They were far from the only Jews who exploited other minorities. When you get kicked around a good deal, having someone even lower on the totem pole to kick around makes the pain more bearable.

As for gays, I've had gay relatives on both sides of my large extended family for several generations, so that's never been much of a problem for anybody. It was never openly discussed. Any mention of homosexuality was usually met with a shrug. Sexuality didn't matter very much...but skintone most certainly did.Grizz 65https://www.blogger.com/profile/02892702223228764894noreply@blogger.com
