I had the same experience in the Navy -- my fellow sailors often took umbrage at their Filipino shipmates should they dare to talk amongst themselves in Tagalog. So, yes, maybe those tourists are snickering at vanitas americana or maybe they're saying, "Oh my God, I wish we had one of those in the Alps!
