This native, who lived half his life in his hometown, thought he knew almost everything about "The City That Works" (as it was called under Daley the Elder). You proved me wrong.

This year, one of my gifts was "The Encyclopedia of Chicago" (edited by Grossman, Keating, and Reiff). Over eleven hundred pages. Two inches thick. Maps and charts up the wazoo. If you don't already have it, I recommend it highly.

I came somewhat late to the party. Didn't discover EGD until shortly before Sniffy's election victory (a win that you predicted), but I lurked for another year, so as to learn the lay of the land and what flew and what didn't. And mainly, to see what would and would not piss you off. When I finally began to comment, you became not "Neil"...but "Mr. S"--as a further sign of my respect.

To Sinatra's closest friends and associates, he was "Frank"--but those somewhat more distant often addressed him as Mr. S, as did those who worked for him. In my book, you can shape words like he could shape notes. There are only a handful of sites that I visit every goddamn day, without fail. And EGD is one of them.

Zei gesunt, boychik. Have a joyous, fruitful, and productive new year. All the best to you and yours in 2021. And thanks, Mr. S. Thanks. I really mean it.Grizz 65https://www.blogger.com/profile/02892702223228764894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-49707531506582851612020-12-30T13:09:00.067-06:002020-12-30T13:09:00.067-06:00"Daddy, what did you do in the great war.&quo..."Daddy, what did you do in the great war." A 20th Century echo of Henry V's great speech before Agincourt: "Gentlemen in England now abed will curse themselves they were not here." When I was in England in the 1950s people still spoke of having had "a good war," meaning that they made a contribution and managed to survive." Necessary I suppose for some I knew had worked at Bletchley Park and and what they achieved went for many years unsung.

Irrelevant I suppose except by me, but one thing I like about the column is the way it sparks associations with things I've read or experienced. Anyway, I think you can claim "a good year."

TomTomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09641357239788323783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-45666858468032661542020-12-30T12:10:43.334-06:002020-12-30T12:10:43.334-06:00Thanks for writing this everyday.
