The infirmities of aging might justly evoke sympathy, but don't automatically entitle one to be an obnoxious pain in the ass.

Re the book by Harris, the demographic problem is complex. Too many old people in North America, Europe and Japan. Too many young people in much of the developing world. Of the two problems, the second seems the more explosive.

It is, of course, a problem that medical science is keeping more and more of us around past our sell date, but that's something that's hard to talk about. Anthony Trollope, who feared not death but dreaded being incapacitated and unable to work, wrote a dystopian novel near the end of his life titled "The Fixed Period." About an island colony with limited resources which sought to solve its demographic problem by mandating "humane euthanasia" for everyone reaching the age of 68. As might be expected, the project didn't turn out well, and it is the only one of Trollope's 47 novels that didn't earn a profit.

Tom EvansAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-7969209533852527252015-02-06T15:47:41.613-06:002015-02-06T15:47:41.613-06:00And some need professional helpers only. And some need professional helpers only.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-50121180099205343642015-02-06T15:47:09.293-06:002015-02-06T15:47:09.293-06:00Some elders are very nasty though, even to helpers...Some elders are very nasty though, even to helpers or weren't good parents to begin with.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-90503410420689552902015-02-06T12:06:38.624-06:002015-02-06T12:06:38.624-06:00The final paragraph reminds me of the John Prine s...The final paragraph reminds me of the John Prine song "Hello in there." (I've been thinking of buying stock in "Depends") ....but, in all seriousness, we need to treat our elders as we would hope to be treated: with dignity, patience and understanding. Most of my family has moved out of state, so it was my responsibility to provide care for my father and uncle when they needed it, and it wasn't always easy since they lived alone together at the end, and refused to leave their home. But I'll never regret the time and effort it took, doing what they requested, trying to keep them comfortable and happy. This aging of the Western World may be what does us in. We may go out not with a bang, but with a wheeze. The youthful barbarians may have a say in the matter as well, I guess.
Johntatehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10088632798195131329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972382144120426476.post-71047674995297295522015-02-06T09:29:28.500-06:002015-02-06T09:29:28.500-06:00P.S. and there is little help from the govt.
