There is no debate over the ongoing abuse of immigrants

"The Last Yankee," 1888

     Journalism is failing America.
At least mainstream media, newspapers and TV networks and such, the remnant still chugging away.
What's our job? To report the news, to convey what’s happening.
And what do we do? Describe fantasies, ghosts, processes that aren’t occurring.
Consider the recent murder of Loyola student Sheridan Gorman, out with a group of friends at a beach in Rogers Park when approached by a masked man, shot in the head and killed.
     That was all too real.
But the moment the suspect was identified as a Venezuelan immigrant, the MAGA outrage machine started to whir. Led by President Donald Trump, who called him “an animal.” The murder was waved about as confirmation. Because one member of a minority group always represents everybody in that group. While white folks, naturally, are individuals, each unique in his or her own way, hardly responsible for their own actions, never mind stand-ins for anybody else.
And how did the media present this deceptive carnival? This acrobatic leap from one crime on the North Side of Chicago, one victim and one suspect, to the entire country and all immigrants everywhere?
A conversation. An argument. The Sun-Times called it “a national immigration debate.”
There is no conversation. No argument. Nobody is debating.
What is going on is dehumanization. The officially designated pariah group — nowadays, immigrants — is being stained with false rationales to justify their abuse: they are violent; they are diseased, they don't belong. If these rationals are contradictory — they are lazy and take all the good jobs — that doesn't matter. In 1930s, the Jews were both dirty vermin crouched in the shadows and jewel-encrusted millionaires secretly running the world. Few Germans seemed bothered by the contradiction.
The nation is busily building ... let's call them “detention camps” ... for this despised group. Billions are being spent ramping up a paramilitary force to snatch people off the street. Don’t be fooled by the hesitation after Minneapolis. A temporary setback. The Democrats trying to get ICE under control is what the entire airport nightmare is about. Air travel in the United States is being throttled so we can deport more immigrants. A reminder that racism blows back on the racist. Trying to hurt others, they hurt themselves. Ask the Germans.
Why doesn't the media hit this point harder? Our error comes from a 7th grade civics class, how-a-bill-becomes-a-law mindset. It's our job to list the excuses given, noting, eventually, how inaccurate they are.

  1. You Mr Steinberg I remember the press. You're trying to present yourself as somehow different from all the rest.

You don't welcome a debate you just want a pontificate.

Immigration policy in this country needed to be overhauled before Trump became president.
It needs to be overhauled now.

Immigrants are good for this country we need them we should encourage them to come.

Believing it should be an orderly system where they follow the rules does not make me maga.

Supporting the removal of people who are here without having come by following the rules does not make me maga.

You don't want to debate you want to paint everyone with a broad brush just like the people who you're accusing focaccia

    1. What rules? Half the people being deported WERE working through the system. Trump isn't overhauling the system. Greg Bovino told the New York Times he wants to deport 100 million people. More than a quarter of the country. What makes you MAGA is supporting Trump, which also makes you a coward, as your cosplaying a sensible person above illustrates. If the shoe fits, wear it. If it doesn't fit, what are you complaining about?

    2. "You don't welcome a debate you just want a pontificate." Right back atcha, Paul.

That's a rather odd complaint from somebody who has had 56 lines of commentary published as of 7:29 a.m. by the guy who doesn't welcome debate.

I've responded to you on more than one occasion previously. I've discovered, when you don't reply, that there's little point in doing so.

    2. You deserve a lot of credit for addressing this issue and trying to counterbalance some of the coverage even in your own paper, NS.

I gotta say, when I saw the screaming headline in the Sun-Times one week ago today: "VENEZUELAN MIGRANT CHARGED WITH MURDER OF LOYOLA STUDENT," I was shocked. For a paper that is generally doing a very good job, and particularly one that prides itself on its clever headlines, I thought that was quite disappointing. (Not that a clever headline was called for there, by any means, but that was a headline Stephen Miller could have submitted.)

You'd never see similar type announcing "White guy whose ancestors arrived on the Mayflower found guilty of murder."

That being said, it's terrible that the parents and loved ones of Ms. Gorman find themselves dealing not just with this horrible tragedy, but the political / media free-for-all accompanying it.

  3. I'm complaining about you.

There are rules for immigrating to the United States. You make an application and you wait. It takes far too long for the application to be processed.

Many millions of people came here without making an application and some of them have been here for a long time.
Our immigration policy has been lacking for a long time.

Might not remember but there was an amnesty some 25 years ago.
Part of the way that that passed Congress was that it had a stipulation that it would never happen again.

That's why there's been no amnesty for the millions of people who are here made lives contribute to our society.

Immigrants don't take the best jobs in all cases but some like those from Southeast Asia do and drive down the compensation for Americans who have spent tens of thousands of dollars to get an education as engineers

Most take really crappy jobs. Because giant corporate entities are taking advantage of these poor people that risk their lives to get here.

The asylum system is broken and people came claiming asylum when they had no right to that claim

There is a debate to be had I agree but you immediately turned it into an ad hominem attack if we can't talk to each other we're f*****.

This circumstance needs to be addressed in a rational way you're being irrational.

Immigrants do commit crimes just like other people do and the rates are difficult to determine but you have hung your hat on a statistics that was published that said immigrants commit crimes at far lesser rates than native born Americans.

That's not a proven fact it's about who gets caught and who's living in an underground circumstance where it's difficult to determine who committed the crime because other frightened people aren't willing to come forward to testify or identify these people.

Many crimes and immigrants commit are committed against other undocumented people.

There needs to be a debate we need to find a way to convince our Representatives that their careers in office are not as important as the lives

Of their constituents even the constituents that aren't able to vote for them yet.

I used to be an open borders guy but it was predicated on the fact that people would return to their country of origin and not stay here forever.

Now I'm a please change the laws guy.

It's going to take time and a lot of effort and honesty and not choosing sides to get a policy in place that's the best thing for the citizens of this country and for the future citizens of this country.

Go ahead be a snarly prick about everything or find some Middle ground which is been abandoned by both sides which makes it so that nothing gets done and work at each other's throats.

  4. Yeah, too bad you decided to use the unbelievably cruel, senseless murder of a young woman, to again make a point about Trump administration tactics. At this point, it's kind of sick. This girl's own classmates apologizing for using the wrong terminology to describe the murderer. And I think one of our stellar politicians saying she was in the wrong place, wrong time. I don't know if your life has ever been touched by violence, but the way people who should know better have reacted to this girl's murder is the reason people turn to Trump. Sure, he couldn't care less about this girl, but her parents are hurting, and one person is offering comfort, and other people are worried this guy's feelings are gonna be hurt because he was called illegal

Have made countless visits to Farwell Pier since boyhood.
My grandma's lived nearby in the 50s and 60s.As did I, in the 70s.

But it's not what it once was. Hasn't been for ages.
Nothing very good happens in East Rogers Park after midnight.

The pier is one of the most photogenic spots in the city.
On one of the city's best beaches. Sand, sky, the city skyline.

The Loyola dorms are a couple of blocks away.
The pier is a natural place for college kids to gravitate to.

But not at 1:30 AM. Not in today's Chicago. Not in today's world.
That's the sad reality. Worse still, the crime is now fodder for MAGA hate.

I would weep for the victim, for my hometown, and for my country.
But I've been out of tears for a long time. Just shaking my head. Again.

When I was in highschool and on the wrestling team, I never got pinned. Not once, although I lost my fair share of matches. If my opponent had me on my back, I could arch up on the back of my head to keep at least one shoulder off the mat. It was called a bridge. My coach took me aside one day and told me that I was relying too much on my bridge. What I needed was to learn how to wrestle, instead of just reacting to what the other guy was doing.
There's a life lesson in there.

  7. I've seen few stories about how the immigrant in question ended up in Chicago. Why is no one discussing the story about his detention in Texas? Why aren't people troubled by the story that his request to be sent to Colombia was turned down -- that instead, Gov. Abbott had him put on a bus that brought him to Chicago?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Why aren't you troubled by the fact that he put a mask over his face and slaughtered a young college student just for the heck of it. I actually had to take a minute to calm down after reading about your touching concern for a cold blooded murderer. Maybe you can go visit him. But make sure you wear a mask. I hear he's got tuberculosis, not that that should be an issue for you

      Delete
    2. Are you being deliberately obtuse? Aubrey is clearly pointing out that if he had been sent to Colombia, he would not have been in Chicago to commit murder. He would not have been in the United States at all. She says nothing to imply she's more concerned about the perpetrator's welfare than the victim's, so you should be able to calm your faux outrage pretty easily.

      Delete
    3. I find it remarkable that you conclude I'm not troubled by what the immigrant did. But because you have drawn such a conclusion, I realize I need to inform you that I am indeed troubled by the fact that his behavior led to the death of a young college student. My concern for her death, however, doesn't prevent me from realizing that if the Texas authorities hadn't put the immigrant in a bus and sent him to Chicago, he wouldn't have been on that pier that night, so the young woman would quite probably still be alive.

Neil, you are spot on! If we want democracy, we need a strong an independent free press.
A strong 4th Estate. You and your remaining journalists are the watchdog of democracy, acting as an independent check on the three formal branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial). You have power to inform the public and hold officials accountable.
I agree we have allowed those who want debate to effectively stop any meaningful dialogue. They have used free speech to preach hate and divide us. Time to call them out as the hypocrites and destroyers of our Republic they are. Keep it up Neil!

  10. The majority of, if not all, school shootings are committed by young white men. But no one labels all young white men mass shooters, and they shouldn’t all be labeled that way. But the same doesn’t apply to an immigrant committing a crime.

  11. We live in a very strange time. Our world has endless access to information and yet the most important, confirmed, and true aspects are hidden behind paywalls and buried beneath the mountains of propaganda.

While I like to think that at some point, news and media existed purely to educate the population, I am probably just being naive. I am certain, currently, the monoliths that are corporate news media care only about increasing their own financial well being. The Chicago Tribune is a wonderful example of this. A once powerful entity has been stripped of its assets and bled dry of every last penny. It's emaciated existence now only exists to help legitimize right wing talking points, accentuate what-a-boutism, and convince "center of the road independents" that both sides are the same so it's ok to continue voting for republicans. The current media landscape hold democrats accountable while pushing the right wing as morally superior. People wonder why "young people" get their news from tiktok.

The sad truth is that we live in a world where the all mighty dollar reigns supreme. And to that end, the only thing that matters is inflating your own wealth. There are so many aspects of our current existence that have been immeasurably degraded by the push for wealth. The only way our society can survive is by certain things being done purely for the good of us all, with no ulterior motives; unbiased news, insurance, healthcare, electricity, clear water, good and safe food… the moment something becomes about making money, it becomes tainted its on longer about the item and only about the money.

I like the idea of more taxes, especially on the rich. I like the idea of getting money out politics. I like the idea that a government do everything it can to avoid an Epstein class. I like the idea that we do the thing because it i meaningful, not so that we can make sure we can afford food, or medical care, or a roof over our heads.

I will continue to say it until i'm locked up, but the republicans are the problem. Watching Mike Johnson lie is disgusting. its even worse knowing that he considers himself a good christian (and that others agree with that). I hate westburrow baptis church and chick-a-filet. I hate hobby lobby and the manophere. I hate the idea ICE and a supreme court that doesn't believe in the constitution. I hate the mental gymnastics that republicans do and that reporters let them get away with. I hate that republicans never follow the rule and always get away with it.

I have a lot of hate right now.I wonder what will happen to it.

  12. Thanks, Neil. Most of journalism seems to be lazily following events, rather than leading and providing new information. If we had a Congress really acting as representatives of the people, they would be working on solutions. 13. Westboro Baptist church is basically a joke now that Fred Phelps, its loony beyond insane head is dead. They don't seem to go anywhere with their vile protests. The two I saw here, one at the University of Chicago was really funny, with the students laughing them out of the area & the one in front of the Emanuel Jewish Congregation o Sheridan Road was a disaster for them. Not only were a bunch of loud motorcycles roaring by all the time drowning them out, when they went to leave the city, all the tires on their van had been slashed up.
Phelps's death seems to have caused them to reassess their lives & stop harassing people at funerals & other places.
As for Chik-Fil-A, it's overpriced & most of the male employees at the one I went to several years ago were out gay men, the same at the one Hobby Lobby I was in, the male employees were almost all gay & the place is flat out creepy to go into. Filled with bizarre religious junk & a whole section to that weird group of women who wear red hats go out together wearing those hats, that was long before the deranged & demented child rapist got into red hats.

    1. We're the haters? C'mon, Paul. Some of us may well be elderly, but the "Fuck your feelings" crowd has the inside track on that description.

As for being sycophants in an echo chamber... Neil writes a lot of strong commentary that makes sense. The fact that more people who enjoy his column and blog agree with it than disagree isn't too surprising, is it? Plus, the typical MAGA fan who gets their information from Fux News (not a typo) aren't known for their intellectual curiosity, and would be proud to say that they never read his "liberal" stuff.

You've now written more words on this comment thread than were in the column. Neil has written in the past that, as he sees it, he gets to have his say in his column and blog posts, and that the comment section that we're utilizing is for us to have our say. He could probably spend all day, every day, arguing with people who disagree with him here, on Facebook, via email, etc. Uh, while I actually do wish he would reply a bit more, I certainly understand why he doesn't.

He's also quoted Samuel Johnson often: "Sir, I have found you an argument; but I am not obliged to find you an understanding."

There are a number of folks here who disagree with him with regard to certain posts, myself included. We're not all "praising the proprietor" all the time.

You wrote (among MANY other things): "It's going to take time and a lot of effort and honesty and not choosing sides to get a policy in place that's the best thing for the citizens of this country and for the future citizens of this country." A lot of effort WAS expended and in 2024 a bipartisan bill was proposed that would at least have been a step in the right direction. It was vehemently opposed by Trump and HIS sycophants in the Senate and dismissed.

Why? At least partly because the orange felon needs his followers to be riled up about stuff, such as demonizing immigrants, people of color, and trans people.

He doesn't actually care about immigration. (Despite saying he would, he's never explained, for example, exactly how his wife became a citizen.) He doesn't care about the rule of law. He doesn't care about the price of groceries or gas. He cares about power and money and using whatever methods are necessary to accumulate more.

Bipartisan effort is necessary but this bill would not solve the immigration circumstance
We need more from our Representatives

      Delete
    3. Okay, I looked at that article, Paul. I had seen several like it before I posted my comment. That's why I said "a step in the right direction," in that at least it attempted to deal with the issues, but not "a fine bill" or something like that.

The article does say "the Border Act identifies many of the key policy areas that need to be addressed" before concluding that "greater efficiency should not require cutting corners on due process or adopting overly restrictive policies at the border." But it's certainly debatable whether that bill was worthwhile, or not. What's NOT debatable is that Trump wants to deport people, not try to work on solving the problem.

Regardless, we can agree that "We need more from our Representatives." To me, that's precisely the point. We DO need more, but the Republicans run all 3 branches of the government right now. We definitely will not be getting "more" productive, beneficial legislation with regard to immigration from the toadies in the House and Senate as long as this regime is in power, because the orange felon they're in thrall to doesn't want it.

There's a Republican in Texas who has called for the deportation of 100 million people. He was just given a chance to spout this nonsense at the Conservative Political Action Conference. I don't need to wonder where he got the idea that such an idea might find support among the current crew of "conservatives." Former Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino was happy to back it.

      Delete
    4. Thank you Jakash for checking back and reading the link.

This is where it always gets tricky
Hundreds of thousands of people a year were being deported by previous administrations.

I didn't like it I was not a fan I was an open borders guy as I've said but that was predicated on people not staying permanently they had to go home

      I question my stance now.

Our borders have been tightened up and far fewer people are coming here far fewer people are considering coming

The more publicized way that this administration is going about deportations which I don't completely agree with and I certainly find it appalling that people have been killed. Is making many people go back home on their own.

Now if we could build an infrastructure that allows people who apply to come here that opportunity without having to wait so long we would have what I feel is a good bill.

There aren't 100 million people in this country that would be eligible for deportation. Why take that bait?

We need immigrants we are all immigrants new immigrants are important to this country they boost our economy they open businesses they have children I'm all for immigration.

We need to get to a baseline and then have the infrastructure in place to process people.

I'm not expecting you to agree with all this. What do you think would be a good way to move forward?

      Delete
    5. I'm not "taking that bait," I'm mentioning the kind of thing that is up for discussion at CPAC. Uh, I called it nonsense.

I'm not a policy wonk and have no idea how to move forward. I'm not sure it's possible to move forward, with regard to a lot of issues, as long as the people in power who enable this corrupt, criminal, incompetent president refuse to stand up for the principles that they used to care a lot about.

I appreciate your informed replies, Paul, but that's it for me on this thread.

  17. " Journalism is failing America."
Starting with conflating illegal immigrants with legal, but you know that.

"What's our job? To report the news, to convey what’s happening.
    And what do we do?"
Attempt to shape people's opinions by bastardizing The Holocaust to fit your narrative and mixing in Dostoevsky to distract from the fact that you refuse to follow a single train of thought. Just spin from one item to the next. But leftists love a good Argumentum ad Hitlerum, trivializing the horrors of The Holocaust just to score emotional points.

But the moment the suspect was identified as a Venezuelan immigrant, "
Illegal Immigrant who was released by Sleeping Joe's Border Patrol, was housed and fed by the US taxpayers, was arrested for shoplifting in Chicago, and released onto the streets instead of being turned over to ICE because compassion™. And Sheridan Gorman was murdered by him. But for the policies of the Democrats at the federal, state, and city level, she would still be alive. That's on the American left. It's on Johnson, it's on Pritzker, it's on the corpse that mouldered in the White House for four years. It's on you and every other depraved sonofabitch who puts illegal immigrants over the American people.

"Gorman wasn’t a person, in their eyes, she’s a symbol, the latest in a list of sympathetic victims"
Sympathetic victims that you can't even spend more than a few sentences on before going on your excuse crusade.

    "always women"
Someone has to give a damn about women because, unless it involves exterminating them before they're born, you don't provide evidence that you do. And there's plenty of men who have been victims. You might try and do some of that journalism and chat with Angel Families. But you wouldn't do that. You'd have to give a damn about Americans.
Why don't you give a damn? He had a gun and obviously wasn't supposed to. You can't even stick to your gun control fetish. Every school shooting, people wonder why they weren't stopped earlier. Medina-Medina should have been stopped at least twice by the people who swear to protect us, first and foremost, and had the nerve to call themselves "leaders".
Clearly the reality is that you just don't give a damn about victims of any sort beyond how they can be used as props or in your intersectionality pissing matches. You really don't care about Sheridan Gorman or any other victims of violence, you just hate Trump. And for that, you ARE subhuman and there's no having a "conversation" that entertains your excuses and propaganda. You want your new slave labor and replacement voters and damn anyone who gets in the way. It's 1861 with a twist.
Oh, I almost forgot. It's interesting how the Useful Idiots pretend to give a damn about Epstein, after insisting it was just a conspiracy theory. But you can't even call for the removal of the pedophile illegal immigrants. You really want to have a conversation? Let's start there. The American left will protect them too, just like they did in LA, Somaliasota, and numerous other cities. No. You don't care about the victims, you love illegals more than Americans and you *HATE* Trump and MAGA more.
P.P.S. "The Democrats trying to get ICE under control is what the entire airport nightmare is about. Air travel in the United States is being throttled so we can deport more immigrants."
First you admit that the Dipshitcrats shut it down. Next sentence, you blame Trump and MAGA. Bet you thought that would just sail right by. Or didn't think at all. Here again, the Dipshitcrats tell us who their priority is. Punish the American people even more, while they fly first class (no waiting), to attend a No Kings circle jerk.
Consider lecturing the Boy with the Schutzstaffel Tattoo and Holocaust denier running for the Senate in Maine. I'm sure you two could have a few laughs dishonoring those victims. #GFY

Neil also lives in burb with a large Jewish contingent that is economically walled from most 3rd world invaders (they are here for Welfare; public students costing $21k/year to taxpayers for starters). Neil is bravely honest about his life, but doesn't have to face the dangers Ms. Gorman did just once. Imagine her parents. Explain to them it is all about cheap labor. The accused murderer runs free of COVID testing and all other standards.

Neil tows the Democratic Party of Illinois line. Kamala Harris didn't win a single primary election. No Kings? It is illegal to enter the country outside a port of entry. I thought Jews invented law and are a cornerstone of civilization. If we all pick and choose, Hitler is next.

    2. "Someone has to give a damn about women." Aren't these guys cute? Give them credit. They produce such a steaming pile of horseshit that nobody wants to pick through it. I sure don't. What would be the point?

    3. The point is some of what they say is an accurate observation some of what you say is an accurate observation point out the things that they say that aren't accurate and accept the things that you say that aren't accurate and find some compromise it's there we need to as a nation move toward one another and not away.

    5. Thanks for wake-up call, Mister S...by posting some of the replies you get every goddamn day from the haters and the red-hats and the fascists. The ones that usually never see the light of day at EGD. Sobering reminders of the mindsets that the decent and sane people in this country are facing and having to deal with.

Sticking to my own kind online means I rarely see these kinds of rants anymore. When I do encounter them, I just rip them new orifices and then block them. Reading one or more of these diatribes is like being slapped across the face with a big wad of toilet paper. Used toilet paper.

Their poisoned and polluted minds are already made up, Mister S. Don't try to confuse them with facts. You can't fix someone who's overdosed on the Kool-Aid. The best answer is often silence. Or something short and direct and pithy, like a GFY.

    6. Not gonna bother addressing the rest of the claims in these diatribes, but "Sleeping Joe" is far from an effective taunt at this point, when there are more videos of your guy dozing off in meetings than there are references to Sleepy in "Snow White."

    7. I wondered myself, Grizz, why I posted them. I guess because they were written in coherent sentences, and I figured, "Why not let them through?" It's the world we're living in. They're still winning.

    8. Even though they piss me off royally, Mister S, thanks for the heads-up.

  18. Can you sum it up into a more coherent thought as to why you think Jose Medina-Medina is more valuable than Sheridan Gorman? Can you explain why those who swore to protect us at the federal, state, and city level dropped the ball or not?

    1. Can you coherently explain how anyone here has indicated that they think his life is more valuable than hers?

    2. Can you explain why those of us with reading comprehension skills above kindergartener level don't find the same overt misrepresentation of the killer and the victim?

Even for a purveyor of whataboutism, you're incredibly clumsy.
