The Apple store in Northbrook, which recently closed. |
So last week the president announces these insane tariffs. Which he immediately rescinds — no, puts on a 90-day hold. Before announcing other, equally insane, economy-killing tariffs on China, the source of most of our electronics, particularly iPhones. Which he also immediately scraps — well, makes exceptions for the phones and electronics.
Which I guess is a relief. Reversing folly is good. The tanking stock market clawed back some of its losses. Though we're still in a situation of total uncertainty, and nobody wants to build a factory or invest when the market can be — will be, judging from the recent past — whipsawed again and again by the whims of an idiot.
This almost prompts me to wonder why anybody cares at all what he says or does, given how little weight those pronouncements and decisions carry? The man is a chronic, habitual liar. We can't we accept it, assume it? Should we not have reached that point a long time ago?
But that too is an illusion, the belief that nothing is significant, nothing true. Mistakes are not being reversed. Real damage is being inflicted — lasting damage, to decades-old relationships, to the American reputation as a world leader. We're becoming a pariah nation, half-feared, half ridiculed. And even "becoming" is optimistic. We're there, right now, our closest allies talking among themselves about how to best carry on without us.
Every 20th of the month is another anniversary of his administration. A week from today it will be three months. A quarter of a year. One-sixteenth of his second administration, assuming he doesn't maneuver himself into a third, which, like most suppositions that a particular tradition will somehow endure, is no longer a safe assumption. Fifteen-sixteenths left to go. A very long time. As a certain program says: one day at a time.

ReplyDeleteWill we survive the fresh Hells of the next fifteen-sixthteenths?
ReplyDeleteWell asked.
DeleteNever forget, there is an IQ test he apparently took at the private military high school his terrible parents sent him to to break him of being a bully, but in fact turned him into a bigger bully, showed his IQ at 75.
ReplyDeleteThe facts are, he's a moron, who doesn't read, has no curiosity about anything, knows nothing about World War II, didn't know about the attack on Pearl Harbor, he only watches Fox [alleged] News Channel or Newsmax or OANN, two other even more wing nut alleged news channels.
He makes shit up every day & actually believes due to his obvious dementia, which combined with his abject stupidity & utter insanity, is destroying this country.
I'm furious at the White House press corps, because every time he says showers just go "Drip, drip, drip", why don't they demand he show them a shower that just drips?
The media are a huge problem, with the NY Times the worst, they have sanewashed him for 20 years! And unfortunately the rest of the media, even the right wing media, follows the lead of the NYT all the time!
What does the closing of the Northbrook Apple store foretell for brick and mortar Apple retail?
ReplyDeleteThe man has dementia and he's going to be 79 in June. I truly don't think he's going to live to see the end of this term.
ReplyDeleteyour lips to go's ears, anonymous
DeleteOne can hope.
DeleteDementia isn't what kills you, it's the health issues brought on by old age.
DeleteMy brother-in-law has had dementia for quite a while now, and he will be 86 next month. He could easily survive into his 90s, and outlive his wife..
His wife. That's another story. She is his round-the-clock caregiver, and her life has become a living hell. My wife (his kid sister) and I do whatever we can.
Any chance of nursing home care for your bil, Grizz? Medicaid homes might cost less, even if there is some wait.
DeleteSomeone must have reminded him of this ancient news: "Jan 3, 2025 — Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, will personally give $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump's inaugural committee."
ReplyDeleteIt’s beyond scary. At this point I’m grateful just to wake up to another day.
ReplyDeleteChannel flipping. Fell on today's Fareed Zakaria commentary with a short history of tariffs and the corruption they entailed. Even conservative think tank studies prove how Trump's first term tariffs incited systematic corruption and that his current actions are blatantly fueling systemic economic-political corruption of a historic scale. Tariffs are not the singular imposition most Americans believe them to be. Exceptions abound, granted on a pay-to-opt-out, kiss my ring patronage.
ReplyDeleteWho can honestly claim surprise?
I believe it was Arthur Koestler who called the Soviet Union a "Mercy State," in that there were so many laws and rules that were impossible to avoid without someone in power granting exemptions to favored individuals.
DeleteLooks like the U.S. is rapidly turning into such a state.

Spring at last, spring at last. Despite the persistent and annoying chill, the weather is slowly improving, there's a lot more sunshine, and the magnolia tree outside my front window has been blooming for almost two weeks now. Its snow-white flowers have never looked more stunning in the 32 years I've lived here. And yet...and yet...
ReplyDeleteEvery day that Felonious is still breathing...and in control...automatically becomes another bad day. If you know anything at all about WWII...of which I have been a student for almost 65 years...you know how Adolf Hitler's mental state deteriorated as the war progressed, and Germany began losing it.
Adolf began "losing it" as well, and his paranoia and his detachment from reality spelled doom for countless numbers of combatants and civilians. Simply and colloquially put, he became as crazy as a shithouse rat. He took total command of the military, and issued orders to vast armies that no longer existed. He ranted about wonder weapons, and miracles that would snatch victory from inevitable defeat.
The same thing appears to be happening to Orange Julius. He seems to have become unaware of what has happened to this country in a remarkably short time. A matter of weeks and months. Much of the damage may prove to be permanent and irreversible, like the lungs of a thirty-year cigarette smoker. He could stroke out tomorrow, as FDR did 80 years ago, and we would still be waist-deep in shit.
As Churchill said: "This is not the beginning of the end...it is only the end of the beginning." The finale of the horror show is still far, far away. And this decade-long national nightmare is not going to end well.
It seems like we are beating a dead horse when we comment on his stupidity and lies and self aggrandizement. Is there anyone who's not a maga who doesn't know how evil and closed minded he is? I have a relative who says "well, I don't really like him, but who else was there to vote for?" She also says "I didn't realize that he'd be this bad!" Dumbass. And...do Apple stores close very often? They always seem busy!
ReplyDeleteAt this point, I'm more optimistic about foreign adversaries and our former US allies being able to "do something" to at least slow down the carnage. I no longer have faith in congress or the supreme court to defend the constitution.
ReplyDeleteI read an article last night about how Gary Cohn, Trump's 1st economic advisor, repeatedly steered Trump from the tariff scenario we now have, but quit in disgust because Trump refused to consider anything apart from his "gut feelings" on the subject. Thus opening the door for Navaro/ Ron Vara to take his place.
I worry that Trump's esteem issues compel him to "prove" himself over and over in increasingly dangerous ways. Now he's out to show the world - in dramatic fashion - that he, and he alone, is the most brilliant businessman/negotiator in existence. To succeed when everyone else advised against it.... kind of like TWO coups in one!
If Trump’s IQ is really 75, why can’t he be declared unfit for office? If not that, why can’t he be impeached for dismantling our government? Is it strictly the sycophants refusing to call a spade a spade that’s keeping the felon in office?
