Nancy MacLean |
"I got DOGE'd today," said an academic sitting next to me last week at the opening session of the Organization of American Historians. Meaning, the National Endowment for the Humanities NEH grant funding her job had been axed by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, part of the general dismantling of our government, like a house being torn down with the family still living inside.
With higher education and honest American history also under siege, I decided to attend the OAH's plenary session, "Historians and the Attacks on Education."
David W. Blight, of Yale, president of OAH, opened the evening.
"We as historians perhaps never have faced this kind of assault that we are facing now," he said. "We are a have to figure out: How do we defend ourselves? Do we know how? We're not terrific at leading social movements. We're terrific at research about social movements."
Four panelists expressed themselves well enough. Then Nancy MacLean, of Duke University, author of "Democracy in Chains," got up and briefly explained how we got here. I don't often hand my column over to someone else, but will do so now, editing her remarks for space.
MacLean said:
"The carnival of cruelty enabled by 47’s reelection has very deep roots. Three key groups have been: 1) predatory capitalists; 2) white supremacists; and 3) religious conservatives, led by conservative Protestants oblivious to the actual ethics of Jesus.
"Their combined political power has waxed and waned over more than two centuries. It surged in the run-up to the Civil War, as enslavers and their allies aimed to hold power at any cost, including treason. It was subdued for a time by Reconstruction, then rose again after its members violently defeated America’s first taste of multiracial democracy.
"During the Great Depression, that coalition’s partners were routed by mass working-class movements and new federal policy, only to resurge with the Red Scare after World War II, then be beaten back by the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and 1970s, despite what was proudly called 'massive resistance.'
"Out of that 'massive resistance' came much more intentional coalition building over the last 50 years, building toward today’s bloody-minded determination and unified national power not seen since the 1850s.
"Why so venomous and hell-bent now on revolutionizing America, no matter the toll? Because all three coalition partners are desperate. They see this as their last chance to impose their agenda. They know they won’t have another. Hence, the frenzy to act fast and break things.
"Since the 1990s, predatory capitalists — above all from the fossil fuel sector — have seen their trillions in investments and expected future profits imperiled by social movements and international government action. So they have cultivated partners.
"White supremacists who had never accepted civil rights victories then panicked at the election of Barack Obama in 2008, because they rightly saw the imminent end of white numerical and cultural dominance in a multiracial democracy.

From Kate in Chicago: Thanks for sharing this most prescient speech! I would like to know the reaction of the audience afterwards! Also I am going to look for more discourse from her.
ReplyDeleteNancy is whip smart and wholly committed. She is married to my cousin so we've had the chance to break bread many times over the years. I always walk out smarter than when I walked in. Her succinct and assured explanation of our history as it relates to our current predicament resonates clearly.
ReplyDeleteVery accurate and well said. Prefaced by we're not terrific at leading social movements, ending with we have to fight like the whole world depends on it.
ReplyDeletePretty to think so.
They are the ones with the guns and power. Have you seen the photos of the deportees wearing white t shirts bent over with their heads shaved and face to the floor in El Salvador? That's us.
We are fucked
Maybe don't bend over quite so quickly. There was a time when slavery was the order of the day. Also see the divine right of kings.
Deleteyou're only unarmed if you choose to be.
DeleteJust realized that 4/19 is the 250th anniversary of Lexington and Concord.
DeleteThanks for this. So I guess it's back to the streets on April 19, and ...
ReplyDelete...on the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, fascist provocateurs will attempt to incite violence and rioting. They're hoping for gunfire and death--a Kent State 2.0--so they can bring the hammer down. Perhaps they will label it their Easter Revolution...and on Hitler's Birthday, no less.
DeleteDonaldo Trumpolini can then rant and rail about the "Soros-funded woke mobs of globalist terrorists" (Can you say Jews, boys and girls? He won't), and he can invoke the Insurrection Act. Martial Law. Boots on the ground, bayonets, a mobilized military. Assisted by law enforcement and deputized militias. And vigilantes of all stripes. A lion is in the street.
The script has been written, and you can bet plans have already been made.
They're just waiting for the excuse. Last Saturday, there were hundreds of marches and protests, in which hundreds of thousands of Americans participated. But there were no incidents, and according to Rachel Maddow, only one arrest. In the entire country.
Can that happen again, in another ten days? Maybe. Will our luck hold into May and June? After all, this is America, with a stormy and hot-headed history that dates back to George III. The numbers are growing. Outrage at the behavior of Donald the First is increasing. The stakes are getting higher and higher, and spring will eventually give way to a long, hot summer of discontent.
Realistically, it's difficult to foresee the situation remaining peaceable indefinitely. Think 1775. Or 1860. And once trouble begins, the book will be thrown at our heads. Hitler's playbook. It's heavy...and sharp-edged...and it will hurt.
Thank you for running this excellent summary of where we are and why from Nancy MacLean. So true, the world depends on us to fight this fight. I have two posters ready to create for the next all-hands gathering:
ReplyDeleteDOGE = Dismantling Our Government Entirely
Trump 2.0: The Carnival of Cruelty
Ann, I take offense to the constant labeling of republicans and trump as cruel.
DeleteWhile it might be true, it implies they care, at all.
Cruelty means nothing to trump or the right. They want power by any means. And it doesn't matter who or how it effects others. they literally don't care. we need to stop saying its cruel. You must be human or moral to be cruel. they are neither.
Gotta disagree Double B. They are human. Their cruelty is a means and an end in itself.
DeleteMacLean's explanation of history makes clear what was seldom said. There have always been predators and supremacists.
The American experiment was to counteract the exploiters by dividing and diffusing power.
But, the triple axis of "predatory capitalists; white supremacists; and religious conservatives" is on top for now. I think things will get worse but 250 years of democracy won't go easily.
Thanks, Terry. I appreciate the response.
DeleteI don't believe their cruelty is a means to an end. They can achieve what ever they want (as they are proving right now) without the need for cruelty. In fact, its been argued by many that they could probably do things better, smarter, and more efficiently and come out heroes.
I'm reminded of the arguments people made for the Nazi's being "humane" because they used gas to kill the Jews.
Turns out, it didn't matter to Hitler how the Jews died, but the firing squads made him feel ill, he needed a way to kill efficiently and without the sight of blood. For some reason, we continuously try and make the true evils of our times more human. and it only benefits them.
The end is chilling, yet many people have seen it coming. I do fear we have already lost, we are just do dumb or stubborn to see it. The only thing left, is a full shutdown of the wheels of commerce. If capitalism falters, the tides will turn.
ReplyDeleteToo bad too few realize the power of their own singular dollar.

“The plans have been circulating for years now. The real surprise is that so many leaders of these institutions — from legacy media, to colleges and universities, to law firms and members of Congress — have folded so quickly. That they have taken pains to prostrate themselves to the authoritarians, whose actions don’t even carry the backing of law.
“We can do better. We can fight like the world depends on us. Because it does.”
Could be that the evil cabal of capitalists, white supremacists and anti-Christ Christians will self destruct fighting over who gets the larger share of the loot -- see Musk v. rhe Morons.

Good morning. I have to stop staying up until midnight. I am just about ready to stop doomscrolling. One more check of my email and then bed. But no. Your nightly missives reach my inbox and I can't stop until I read it and, often, shared it with my email list and in the socials.
ReplyDeleteYour decision to "hand over" today's column was brilliant. I am glad to see the number of "likes" and reposts it received on Bluesky.
Thank you
This column seems like a masterstroke to me. Based on some of the things you've shared here, NS, your editors are rather picky about how political they'll allow you to be. Evidently, though, quoting this historian is allowed.
ReplyDeleteThe whole thing is excellent and bracing. But "... the billionaire bro-ligarchy of Silicon Valley, above all the South African apartheid spawn Elon Musk." That's gold, Jerry!
I've found I can quote people saying things I can't say myself, out of some kind of consideration for our 501(c)3 status. I can't pretend to understand, and am not complaining.
Deletean excellent strategy
DeleteFull of thunder, but no lightning. Problem identified. Solution not suggested. What to do? Fight how?
ReplyDeleteThis is a powerful piece. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rick, how do we fight back? Will rallies really accomplish anything? Isn’t there a left wing mastermind out there who can help us?
ReplyDeleteThe big money fought back. They don't want the tariffs. They pulled their money out of the stock markets . Trump and the rest of the shit heads in charge of the "government" heard them.
ReplyDeleteI suggested this and got crickets. File your taxes but don't pay them. That will get their attention. But we are weak and frightened. If you are willing to trade safety and security for liberty what do you end up with? NEITHER!
We talk about resistance but don't want jeopardize anything we have.
So this was written before the hold on tariffs. The market went up 2000 points today as Trump put a hold on them for 90 days. How many people do you think sold stock before the tariffs went in to affect and then bought them back after Trump put a hold on the tariffs.
DeleteGlad you can afford to pay the penalty for unpaid taxes. I'm living as close to the bone as I can and I don't mean a middle class existence. Heck, I can't get anyone in power in any field to do anything, even after after winning a legal battle that took seven years off my life. I still resist, but the game is advancing regardless. Take a turn. Go for it.
DeleteAfter Fukushima the old people in Japan went to help with the cleanup. they felt it it was their duty for the country that they loved and didn't think young people with their whole life ahead of them should go and get poisoned by radiation.
DeleteWe on the other hand are Americans and as old people we're going to squeeze every last second of life out of the end that we can f*** everybody else. We worked hard and we deserve it we make a hobby out of going to the doctor at the end of her life to milk every penny out of the system that we possibly can not realizing we're going to die anyway.
I don't have much either but what I got was from hard work and from this great country that I live in.
I'm willing to do whatever I can.
I'm not frightened . I hear so many people say how scary everything is how they're scared. Be brave my fellow citizens
This is it. This is the concise summary of how we got to this dangerous point in time that I've been missing. It should be required reading for all sentient beings. This moment in time is part of a continuum maintained by a minority of people filled with toxic, misguided certainties. Knowledge of this continuum is a step to dismantling it. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this.
