Saturday fun activity: Where IS this?

This portrait of perhaps the whitest Jesus, ever, is in the window of what is one of my favorite truly weird places in Chicago. I assume everybody who passes by has puzzled over this oddity; I actually went inside and tried to figure it out, and will post the column I wrote about it, years ago, after someone cracks the place.
Where is this portrait, with the glyphic writing in the background (and the ode to the Constitution displayed atop the blog). Even though it might be easy, I just got a crate of "You Were Never in Chicago" from the University of Chicago Press, in hardback yet, and if you guess—remember, no Dales please, at least not until I walk him over his prize from the last time he won—I'll sign it to you, or whomever you please. Remember to post your guesses below. Good luck.

  2. It's the I AM Building...about 170-180 West Washington. I always wanted to go inside the building but was afraid I wouldn't get out

    2. Oh, and that's a good instinct about going in. It's a bucket of strange. I'll look for my column.

  3. Dammit, I knew where it was at midnite, when you usually post this stuff.
I walk past that weird I AM Temple all the time.
It's a weird cult that started in the 1930s & the leaders were charged with fraud..
It's an outgrowth of whatever Madame Blavatsky pushed!

    1. Sorry Clark. I took the wrong line--Milwaukee West, long story--and ended up in Bensenville and it took me three hours to get home, and while I did then get this together, I didn't hit the right button.

  4. Darn! Should have gotten up earlier today. Walked by that weird picture a thousand times along with millions of other Chicagoans.

  5. Yeah, this was one of the easier contests, for sure. One tends to remember that building, having seen it a few times. Fine by me, though. It's nice to recognize the featured spot once in a while, anyway, and not have to wait until Dale googles it to learn the answer. : )

  6. I bet you could write a really excellent column on taking the wrong train! I've done it but I think you could really capture the experience. The 5 stages of grief part of it etc...

  7. Algren mentions this outfit in Chicago: City on the Make. Page 65, in the No More Giants chapter.
