I doubt that my friends would describe me as "easygoing."
But I do know when it's time to just shrug and go with the flow.
Circumstances demanded that I kill a few hours on Saturday. I had a book to read, but needed someplace to sit, plus food of some sort — it was 1 p.m., past my lunchtime. So I walked over to a donut shop, and was confronted with the tableau above.

The clerk was apologetic, at first. And then when she saw me taking a photo, a little defensive. They'd had plenty of donuts at 5 a.m., she said, when they opened. Now, not so much. I didn't want to give her a hard time.
"Hmmm," I said, pondering my options. "I think I'll have a corn muffin."

A glass mug of coffee is only $1.45, but a "Joe-to-go" (I like that) is $24.95? HUH?
ReplyDeleteJoe to Go is 96oz of coffee in a dispensing box.
DeleteIt's probably at least a gallon of coffee.
DeleteThanks for the heads-up. Only Joe I really like is the one I'm gonna vote for again. Not a big coffee drinker. Been in a Starbucks maybe three times in my life, tops, and have no use at all for the place. Drink straight Lake Erie tap water and juice and tea, but mostly a lot of Coca-Cola, which is probably slowly killing me, and it's killing my teeth in the bargain.
DeleteMy wife is exact the same way. Coke guzzler, and a collector of Coke artifacts. We have Coke signs in our red and green kitchen, in Hebrew and Arabic. Don't even keep any coffee in our house. But right now, we probably have at least a hundred cans of Coke on hand. Food and Coke are the only vices I have left.
If you're wondering why I didn't post your geography comment, it was because it's true. I'll post it Wednesday, when it no longer is. You're a smart guy, and I bet you'll figure out why.

DeleteKnowing that so many of the images you post are your own, Mr. S, I had it figured out by Monday morning. Sending a zei gesunt your cousin's way. My wife's cousin is in a similar situation. And that line about the Holocaust Museum? That 's a keeper. You'd have made a good writer for Woody Allen, boychik.
DeleteNot surprising. I do Uber and DoorDash as a side hustle. There has been at least four times I have went to pick up an order at the world’s most popular donut chain, and they don’t have any donuts. How does that happen? They have the word Donuts in their name.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, their donuts are no longer made in the shops. They get 1 delivery in the morning.
DeleteWhatever happened to “time to make the donuts” commercial? Don’t apologize, just make more donuts! I know, nothing is as it seems, and it’s been years since they actually made the donuts. Much like everything else, it is now subcontracted out, and not nearly as fresh. Life isn’t good if no donuts are available.
ReplyDeleteI'd take a corn muffin over a donut any day. Or a cheddar bacon bagel (from the Great American Bagel).
ReplyDeleteCheddar bacon bagel? Oy vey!
DeleteIs this a 24-hour, open all the time place? Or more like bakery, where only a fool shows up at 1 pm and expects to see much of anyything?
ReplyDeleteI wandered into a Dunkin one evening and they were out of donuts. I asked why they didn't turn off the lights and go home.
ReplyDeletethey make their money on coffee
DeleteWas anyone working there?
ReplyDeleteThe exact same thing happened to me about three weeks ago at a popular Zion donut shop. They were out of everything by 9 AM. A donut apocalypse for sure. Has everything given up on “healthy eating”? I hope so.
ReplyDeleteI think Dunkin has shifted their business model to compete with Starbucks. More emphasis on drinks and food items, less emphasis on donuts.
ReplyDeleteVery much off-topic, but did the Sunday Sun-Times just re-run the Saturday sports section?
ReplyDeleteMy wife has worked at cafes and coffee shops and pie shops. Most of her adult life and a good day is when they sell out.
ReplyDeleteA good day for the ownership. Anyway. That's a profitable day when they don't make too many of anything that they basically send home with the employees because Day old donuts are just not a thing A boutique bakery can do to its customers.
Believe it or not having empty shelves or cases early afternoon just causes customers to come in sooner to not miss out. It's a business model they discovered during the pandemic. They used to be open from 8:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night. Now 9:00 to 3:00. Most places can fix you something if you don't mind to wait. But it could be a few minutes cuz they start from scratch. They're trying to make customers happy and they receive very few complaints other than ah. Darn! I missed out on my Queen De mon
The photo of the donut shop doesn't look to me like a Dunkin' Donut shop, as was assumed by a couple of the earlier commenters. Also, the train station sort of looks like an Oak Park Amtrak station bordered by Central Avenue and South Boulevard, but the train with the purple stripe is new to me. Is it a Northbrook station?
ReplyDeletejohn
It's the South Acton station, on the Purple Line...the Fitchburg commuter rail line of the MBTA...Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority.. That's the Greater Boston transit system, more commonly called "the T"...for train or transit or trolley. Like we say "the L"...but only for the elevated and subway trains.
DeleteDecades ago, my wife used to fly to Logan Airport and the ride the T to Acton, Mass. A long shlep, so she could visit a high school friend who lived there. That's why I've heard of the place. Never been there in my life.
But I'm a “juice fan” ...or "juicehead"...a somewhat charming term for enthusiasts of electric railroads...streetcars, trolley buses, rapid transit, and commuter lines. So you came to the right place.

DeleteWait a minute. You forgot the lede: How was the corn muffin?
ReplyDeleteI just had the best corn muffin of my life in, of all places, Zimbabwe.
ReplyDeleteWe have a Dunkin’ nearby; their donuts are fine, and the bagels are decent.
ReplyDelete. The “everything” bagel with veggie cream cheese is my usual order. (We brew our own coffee.)
