All the news except the most important part

The Sun-Times has excellent headline writers. The first thing I noticed Wednesday when I unbagged my paper was the perfect way the front page headline, "HEAVY WAIT" encapsulated the long evening before.
That said, the second thing I and every other reader immediately saw was that the paper had gone to press before the outcome of the election was settled. The edition contained all sorts of information except the one thing that everyone most wanted to know: who won?
Same with the New York Times. A drawback of print journalism — yes, you can spread it over the kitchen table. But it lags. A print newspaper is a relic, immediately outdated. An increasingly unacceptable flaw.
The paper went to press about midnight. The last thing I added to my column was that the result wasn't looking good for Kamala Harris. She had all but lost, but there was still a very narrow path to victory, and if we declared Trump the winner, there was the risk that the outcome would somehow flip. As satisfying as that outcome would be for the future of our starcrossed country, it would still be bad journalism to blow the call. Or as my mantra goes: "Better vague than wrong."
I'd prepped for Election Day writing three columns — one I called "Trump wins," one I called "Kamala wins" and "No decision." I assumed the last would be the one to run and worked hardest on that. What I didn't realize is that it would be chosen at 9 p.m. and mooted about 5:30 a.m., when the election was called for Trump. I like to think I added perspective to the situation — but still, a less-than-ideal work around. On my blog, I could quickly adapt the piece to reflect current, grim reality, starting with the headline, which was "The coin has been tossed and is now spinning" in the paper, and "The tossed coin lands" in the blog
Looking at the papers, and thinking about the long four years ahead, I couldn't help but sadly speculate that by the 2028 election  — if we're still having elections that is — whether there will also be print newspapers, or newspapers of any kind for that matter.
That's probably alarmist, and there is too much alarmism going around already. Newspapers were circling the drain whether Trump got elected or not. Sure, he might stamp on their fingers as they dangle from the cliff. Or he might supercharge their importance. Someone has to oppose the tyrant.
That last sentiment sounds overly optimistic. Trump is about ignoring reality, not confronting it. Accepting his toxic fantasyland, his dismal Disney World, and living in it.
Still, surrender is premature. I had a relative call me and announce that the nation is dead. I disagreed, explaining that even if all of Trump's threatened changes take place, from deporting immigrants to banning trans athletes from high school sports, that won't quite undo democracy. The thing is tenacious and just won't die.
Yes, he's against fair elections — except the most recent one. Not a murmur of complaint, oddly.
Yes, he's against the media, an independent justice system and fair courts. But those won't unravel quite so easily, and from what we saw of Trump's mental deterioration during the campaign, he isn't exactly Mr. Peak Efficiency at this point, not that he ever was.
Yes, his minions will be busy. But at some point they are going to bark against an American public that still expects their Social Security checks to arrive. Many bad things will happen — I figure China will strike a deal with Trump, give him a box of baubles and a state dinner, then invade Taiwan. I tend to hold out faith in the country I love, but I don't want that belief to render me dim-witted. Times change.
Still. I just don't believe the American dream will die that easily. It's too valuable, too cherished, at least by those of us not on our knees welcoming the Great Yam God.
Print newspapers, on the other hand ... well, we'll see.

  1. He's against common sense, sanity, democracy & America as a republic.
He's for crackpots like anti-vaccine RFK Jr, Elon Musk & a whole host of utterly insane Christo-fascists, who believe all the Jews must return to Israel, so the Battle of Armageddon can happen to bring back Jesus.
He's batshit crazy, with dementia as a topping!
He won't last four years, I believe very soon, his equally nutcase VP will remove him via the 25th Amendment for the dementia!

    1. I've been saying for weeks now that TFG won't last that long. His usefulness done, I give it six to eight weeks and Vance will invoke the 25th Amendment and send him back to Florida. Then we'll have Vance for a very long time, time spent implementing Project 2025.

    2. I've heard that idea several times, and don't agree. You're forgetting what a toady Vance is. He'd never take such dynamic action against his master. He'd stand nodding beside Trump's mouldering corpse first.

    3. Neil, yes Vance is a toady, but a power mad one & once the fat traitor's dementia gets worse, even the most loyal of his cabinet are going to start worrying & make the push to remove him. My guess is that rotten to the core RFK Jr. would be the catalyst for it, he has no loyalties except to himself, as he's a narcissistic sociopath, just like the fat traitor! He'd then want to be Vance's VP in exchange for the support, but since he's 70 now, no way he'll ever get a chance at the White House unless he could then get rid of Vance. I think the American public are about to learn a valuable lesson in regards to electing a 78 year old man, who can't walk down a ramp, hold a bottle of water or figure out how to close an umbrella! After this, no more old men running for president!

    4. I don't believe for a second that Vance could summon the courage to turn against Trump. Maybe if Trump were in a coma. Otherwise, I'm reminded of the quote by Verbal Kint:

  5. Should Trump’s threats become real the economy will worsen for most people, and only then will they start to turn against him. It is up to the opposition to stay strong and united and remind people of all the good the Democratic administration did fo for them. When they start to mess eith entitlements like Social Security and Medicare those affected, myself included will arise. The residents of the upscale senior living community where I work said they were all in shock and in mourning. Myself, I am mad as hell at all the racism, seismic, xenophobia, etc., that responded to Trump's vile speeches. Sixth graders students of a friend who teaches in a poor, minority school were distraught. A woman in the doctor's office i visited yesterday was telling a friend that she cried all night, the hopes of millions of women, young and old dashed. I am especially angry at the 10 million people who did not vote, perhaps angry at a Biden policy that Trump will reverse and create more misery by doing so. I always look to history to try to understand the present mess. We survived the Early 2orh century and we will survive now. However, we must fight like our lives depend on it because they do! 7. three thoughts; accountability, struggles, and reality.

Until we are held accountable for our actions. very little will change. Data, facts, and accounts prove--beyond a doubt--that republican policies and governance hurt most Americans in every way shape and form. Trickle down economics has been proven a fallacy for decades, right to work laws have had the opposite effect on jobs and wages, and deregulation has caused widespread abuse of the American people. These are facts. They are proven. There is no disputing the data. And yet, the republicans are time and again let off the hook for their actions. Their failings pined on democrats. and "we" eat it up. Until the republicans are held to task for their actions, Americans will prove to be the deplorable and trash they are, and vote red.

Part two, the struggle. We will need to have a nation wide struggle to make the first point really sink in. 1929 market crash, long food lines, starving children, and more white boys without jobs despite the rights continued broken promises. For some reason people think 6% inflation is bad (and it is) but nearly every economist believes the trump and right wing doctrine will result in things getting astronomically worse. If it doesn't, it's clear "big money" has the system rigged. and while that is most likely also true, American's are going to need to suffer a lot under the yoke of the right before they realize they are wrong.

Lastly, reality. It's clear to me a vast majority of this country live in an alternate reality. The educated are the elite and even if they are right, and can prove it, no one will believe or trust them. The history of man is littered with their stories; they are sheep duped by the wolf, the boy who cries wolf, the cows who are lead to slaughter by the man who feeds them, every story of Jesus... the list goes on. For all of our self help books, podcast, newspapers, blogs, and continuing education courses, we still do not know how to speak to children. Because that's what is going on. The right and their followers are children. Stubborn, stupid, ignorant, and duped. But, eventurally the child will burn themselves on a flame, be heartbroken by a bully, become sick from too much candy, and -- hopefully -- they will learn.

Perhaps some day, the left will understand better the child, the maniac, the reality. Perhaps one day news institutions will realize its not about money, its about the truth. and perhaps some day we will start to fight fire with fire, ire with ire, and the alternate reality with what is real.

Until the suntimes is delivered to every mailbox in america, until fox news and britebart, and youtube, and all right wing propaganda is silenced and fact checked and gone, the only thing left to do is fight.

fight for the poor and the naked. fight for the young and the old. fight for the women and immigrants. fight for the truth. because until people see it, we are doomed to suffer the worst at the hands of our oppressors. make no mistake, they do not care. do you?

The American people have spoken. They said they are tired of being told what to do by the left.
We have no power now unless we take to the streets. But instead we are crying. Because we may be smart but we are weak. The strong side won. Better be careful continuing to call them names. They are in charge now

    2. The left? Most Democrats have never been radical lefties. They have had little real power for decades. Most of it wasn't political as the Republicans controlled more legislators and state offices than the Democrats. It was social influence, half of which the conservatives and reactionaries were happy to embrace ankle, tigh and upper calf so they could enjoy the "sins" while decrying them. And filling their bank accounts selling the myth.

  9. I started to feel a bit better after crying through Harris's concession speech yesterday. I realized one of my election disappointments was that i had so looked forward to never having to see or hear from Trump again. And I decided that may still be within my control. This man is toxic and dangerous. He wants - demands!- to be adored, and everything else in this world - including people- are mere props for his narcissism. I gain no benefit from seeing it, and I will no longer listen to him. Not even the Inaugural Address or State of the Union Address, which I typically watch out of civic duty. I will rely on trusted journalists to interpret what is happening, hopefully presented in a straight-forward and muted fashion, without video or photos, and kept off the front pages. It would be my wish for legitimate news media to have press corps members select one representative to attend any potentially newsworthy event, and share it with others, in order to limit the gaggle of clamoring news reporters shouting questions beneath him as he stands at a podium. Report only news and dry facts. Limit news coverage, crowd size, sensationalism and showmanship. Quote spokespersons or other knowledgeable sources and put them in the video clips instead of Trump to fuel narcissistic injury, hopefully distracting him from doing more damage, or perhaps hastening his demise into incoherence. I realize the president of the United States can't be ignored, but as a citizen, I plan to shun him. I will rely on third parties to tell me what I need to know. I will watch the news on TV with a remote control in my hand! No more video clips of Trump for me!
As for newspapers publishing 'dated' news... I had the same reaction to the "heavy wait" headline as you did, Neil. I remember when I was a kid my parents subscribed to TWO newspapers.... The Chicago Tribune was delivered each morning, and the Chicago Daily News (I think) was delivered every afternoon. The afternoon paper may have even been a precursor to the SunTimes. I still like having an actual newspaper.

    1. I agree. This is the only sane way to go forward with his presidency. All media should be limited to truth reporting only. We tried to be nice the last time and it almost got us all killed with his crazy responses to the pandemic. As a mother of a healthcare worker front line responder I never want my family in that insane situation again. We must learn from our mistakes in the past.

  10. Speaking of the early 20th Century, Woodrow Wilson was considered a hero in the history texts I grew up with. He "kept us out of the War," until he didn't. His self determinacy efforts stopped short of helping any of the "monkeys" from colonized Asia. And most significantly for our times, he was a dyed-in-the-wool Southerner, who reversed many of the advances in racial tolerance made before his presidency.

Unfortunately, Trump will retain the loyalty of his base for quite a while even if they suffer directly from his economic policies as shown years ago in his first stabs at distributing benefits from the top down

  11. Black men were not allowed to vote until 1870, though multiple states were allowed to deny them a vote until 1964. Women did not get the vote until 1920. Obama was elected in 2008, so if we elect a woman to the presidency before 2058 I guess that's progress? (too slow- agreed)

And despite my belief that most people are good, consider the immense popularity of programs/games/movies that feature serial killers, torture, rape, criminal behavior, etc. A significant portion of our population enjoys viewing the graphic denigration and infliction of pain on others. Consider history and the Roman gladiator "games". Or when Christ stood before the crowd and people yelled "Crucify him!", subsequently following him along the streets spitting and cursing at him. Trump was able to glom onto and use those inferior traits in humans, while ignorance and greed allowed others to grab his coattails.

Our Populus is not so far removed from history and I don't believe the Civil War (black v white or free v enslaved) ever really ended.
While I felt despair and slept very little on election night, I cannot carry this weight daily and be crushed by it. I told my 32 year-old son who said he feels "dead inside" that you cannot let the hate of others eat away at the hope in you.

We are witnessing the toxic decay of the Republican Party, fed by its blood thirsty masses. (again-happening too slowly)
We'll have to put as many stop-gaps in their way, as is possible, to protect those in our society who need it most.

  13. While we may have 4 more years of Trump, we'll only have 2 more years until we can get our retribution. As in the past, a Republican congress will over reach and anger enough of the public to sweep their majority out of office in 2026. People may have bought all the lies and promises in 2024, but steeply rising prices (thanks to Trump tariffs), attacks and perhaps even the end of the ACA. and the further erosion of reproductive right will open many eyes. Painful? Undoubtedly. But perhaps worth it if it ultimately saves our democracy.

  14. Hello long time NS fan and supported Trump in all 3 elections. I voted for Trump because I want an end to the Ukraine war, a sensible treaty with North Korea, an end to the Gaza War, FAIR trade deals with China and the rest of the world that has devastated our manufacturing base, no more ridiculous wars and interventions, the border closed and a crack down on the fentanyl that kills 100k Americans a year and ruins the lives of millions (read about Laura Berman's son), accountable intelligence agencies, and I want the USA to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure and get ahold of this insane inflation at the grocery store.

All that said we have a constitution and I am dedicating to defending it and will call Trump out if he oversteps.

Please hear me readers we are your neighbors and we mean you no harm. We're not in a cult. I've read 10 sides of every issue and have come to different conclusions than my fellow citizens.

I've been a Republican all my life and will be voting JB for governor as he's made some excellent common sense reforms in our State.

Please 🙏 my wonderful human loving brothers and sisters on the Left who treat dogs like people, speak to you friends, family, and neighbors that voted for Trump. I know there are some real wackos on our side, ignore them but talk to the reasonable people in your life and let's make this country a better place.

Trump has not spoken of a fair trade deal with China. He wants to punish them and we're going to pay the cost for that through increased prices of consumer goods.
If you're pledging to support the Constitution, what were people doing at the Capitol on January 6th?
      With Trump's encouragement.
And that's who you choose to support someone who doesn't honor our Constitution?

  15. I predict that one of Trump's first acts will be to have his boot-lickers in Congress begin the process of attempting to end presidential term limits. Odds are it will be unsuccessful, but if not his dementia will do him in before he can benefit. But whether or not, we will then be faced with the equally ugly prospect of a Vance presidency. Our only hope is that Trump fans will see the light and come to their senses before the next election.

    1. It has been my experience that Trump fans are incapable of seeing the TRUTH, just as Trump is incapable of seeing it. My parents were life-long loyal (yellow dog) Democrats. They had four children. Of the four, I am the only one who has ever voted for a Democrat. My three siblings have been possessed by the Trump demon since prior to the 2016 election. Those three siblings have produced a total of 18 descendants all of whom are also possessed by the Trump demon. I do not have a glimmer of hope that any of them will ever "see the light and come to their senses".

The only one that I have ever tried to have a political conversation with is my youngest brother and he is so brain washed by Trump that it seems like his brain has been completely removed and replaced by that of an ALIEN!

I would not even get near a political discussion with my other two siblings. I have overheard some of their discussions at family events (yes, I do go to those things, but only with zippered lips). My other two siblings and their descendants are completely convinced that their sole purpose on earth is to be GOD's messengers of Trump's GREATNESS!

    3. Don't be afraid. Be vigilant and active. I would suggest that we start with choosing a standard bearer for the Democrat party. Someone who we can rally behind and is electable. Let me suggest. Kentucky Governor Andy beshear. There will be an election soon in 2 years and we need to get our affairs in order in the Democrat party. We need to identify the issues that resonate with people in America and put policies forward to address these issues in ways that will solve problems that resulted in the election of Donald Trump
Trump is not going to solve those problems. They're still going to be there in 2 years and we have to make sure to change course. Move away from identity politics and look at kitchen table issues of the economy, immigration And crime which have people discussed it with the politicians in Washington, DC. Let's come together and move things in a direction that will benefit everyone. Not just small groups of people who were concerned are being discriminated against. There's not enough of them to win an election. We won't forget about them but we're not going to make them the focus of what we want to do as Democrats going forward but I go on
