See, if only American citizens would just close their eyes, hide in their basements, and let the federal government ramp up its national goon squad of masked thugs, rampaging around Democratic-run cities, challenging brown people and randomly plucking them off the street for possible dispatch to Third World hellhole prisons, then this sort of thing wouldn't happen.
But there was do-gooder Renee Nicole Good, 37, in her Honda Pilot, on a residential street in Minneapolis Wednesday, acting as a "legal observer" — a self-appointed concerned citizen who doesn't want to let her neighbors be secretly muscled into SUVs and whisked off to fates unknown.
On the video, you see Good didn't comply with ICE orders to get out of her car, instead trying to roll away, and was shot in the face and killed for it. Typically, I don't encourage readers to watch such death videos — they can be jarring. But sometimes they're necessary to understand what happened in a situation. You see the split second between when Adam Toledo tossed his gun away and when the officer in that alley fired in 2021, and realize he shouldn't be charged. You see Jason Van Dyke's bullets slamming into the prone body of Laquan McDonald and know his subsequent stint in prison was deserved.
With Wednesday's fatal encounter, you see, from several angles, the yawning gap between the lies President Donald Trump and his administration instantly spun, and what actually happened. You see she was driving slowly away from the officer who ran up and killed her.
Kristi L. Noem, aka ICE Barbie, aka Homeland Security Secretary, called Good's attempt to escape “an act of domestic terrorism,” that she “attacked them" and "attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle.”
Donald Trump somersaulted past that — rare is the lie so bald he can't embellish it — condemning Good because she “violently, willfully and viciously ran over the ICE officer.”
I thought the Trump administration is sympathetic to citizens assaulting police officers. Or is that only while storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021? Pity Good wasn't filmed beating a cop with a metal bar on the Capitol steps. The Trump administration might give her a medal.
Don't worry, the ICE officer is recuperating from his imaginary injuries after being notionally run over. Just the way the "serious injuries" suffered by the ICE officer who killed Chicago cook Silverio Villegas Gonzalez in September magically got better upon closer inspection.
This might be a good moment to step back and remind ourselves what is happening, big picture.
Totalitarian states demand that citizens trade freedom for security by positing harms that do not in fact exist, then promising to liberate people from the perceived threat of these imaginary wrongs.

3 cheers for you, Mr. S and spot on all the way. What a travesty. It's like the Gestapo has been revived.
ReplyDeleteNoem is the worst of the butt kissers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this. Please don't stop.
ReplyDeleteYou must call them what they really are, the demented, deranged, child raping, narcissistic sociopath's, Gestapo!
ReplyDeleteI'm betting that every night that vile, rotten, disgusting excuse for a human, Miller goes home & puts on his genuine Nazi SS uniform & parades around the house on it!
And worst of all, Miller is a Jew & obviously doesn't give a shit that the SS were the actual murderers of six million Jews only 80 years ago!
Stephen Miller is a creature out of fiction. How can such a man exist? A Jewish person who recreates Nazi Germany in the country in which his family escaped such horror? And 70 million people cheer him on. It turns out that "may you live in interesting times" is indeed a curse.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteI'd watched the video before I read your piece. IMO the officer should not have shot Ms. Good. His life was not in danger except when he decided to stand in front of her car.
ReplyDeleteMs. Good and others like her who have decided to impede federal agents , refuse to comply, and disregard the officers directives are putting their life and liberty in jeopardy. I commend them for standing up to ICE agents and our government. Making it clear they do not agree with the actions being taken to remove undocumented residents from the US.
I would not be willing to take a similar risk and make such a sacrifice especially with 3 young children. But I am driving up to Minnesota to demonstrate my outrage and protest her death . Our government should not be executing citizens for minor crimes.
Civil disobedience is an important tool in holding our government to account but as we've seen recently and in the past they might kill you. Passive resistance is my choice. citizens resisting in their vehicles is a questionable tactic. Do not challenge law enforcement and know its likely you'll be arrested .
I constantly feel like I am incapable of doing anything, or enough, to help stem the tide of fascism. I make my comments, have my "talking" points when conversing with others, and I try to call my elected officials and express my "what is wrong with you? do somethings!" I show up at the no kings rallies and do everything I can to not spend my pennies at the businesses that support and/or allow these ongoing atrocities.
ReplyDeleteI just feel like it's not enough and it doesn't do a damn thing.
I will disagree with many people and take Kristi Noem's statement as true and accurate. The actions leading up to the murder of Ms. Good were an act of domestic terrorism. However Ms. Good was not the domestic terrorist, Ms. Noem and her American Gestapo -- as supported by every elected republican (and anyone who supports them financially or otherwise -- are the terrorists.
Fox News is propaganda. Each second it is on the air our republic is in mortal danger. Each second of the day that goes by without our elected leaders calling for ICE and Border Patrol to be disbanded and charged is dangerous (Democrats and Republican's alike).
Every day that the front page of any newspaper in America doesn't run headline "Impeach and Remove ALL REPUBLICANS" we will continue to slide further into the depths of fascism. I am tired of Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries; their bland unemotional, "rational," and "sternly worded" letters and actions only mirroring the very words of Dr. King's warning that white liberal is more dangerous than the conservative.
I am tired of the mainstream media's inability to hold people accountable, with the exception of democrats. I yearn for the day when reporters tell republicans that they are liars and can provide no truth. I pray that democrats start to see the truth that republicans are not their friends and that they should be treated as enemies; after all, this is exactly how republicans act towards them.
I have been reading and listening to Dr. Heather Cox Richardson and many of her interviews. More American's need to listen to people like her. No spin, just information. No lies, just facts.
Your piece is excellent, Neil. Keep on fighting, and writing.
We now live in a fascist regime. Can we make it out, or will we continue to spiral towards total annihilation? The time is now, democratic cities, states, and towns are our Warsaw ghettos. Will we collapse or will we stay strong?
Hyperbole is not a winning strategy.
DeleteImmigration reform
A strong independent judiciary
Taking one or both houses of Congress in the midterms
Following the law
This will give us our best chance of preserving our Democratic institutions for future generations
Anonymous, you are right.
DeleteIf we make it, we will also need to undertake two courses of action.
1: Neurenburg style trials.
2: Reconstruction like following the Civil War, except fixing our mistakes from the original reconstruction, which indecently has resulted in us being here right now. Heather Cox Richardson has a number of pieces in which she explores the issues with post civil war reconstruction as well as how it relates to today.
I would recommend everyone watch and read her work: https://www.youtube.com/@heathercoxrichardson and https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/
Well said!
DeleteThe comments I have read the past couple of days regarding this young woman's murder have been so incredibly cruel. And of course, we heard the president's take. And then I heard that other piece of evil known as our vice president repeatedly referring to her as "that woman," in a tone full of disdain. And it suddenly gave me a better understanding of the mindset of seemingly rational people in nazi Germany, or even the mobs calling for Jesus's crucifixion. When the hatred is not only justified by our leaders, but actually encouraged, millions of people feel they now have permission to call for the death of people they don't agree with. Even revel in it.
ReplyDeleteYes, yes and yes!
DeleteHope is indeed one thing we have left. I intend to cling to it while also encouraging writers like you to keep up the good work.
ReplyDelete"She turned me into a newt."
ReplyDeleteI only wish this was a movie...
Thank you, Mister S.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else remember when a court swearing in included the words, "To tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth," instead of "Go fuck yourself."?
ReplyDeleteThe definition of insanity, is to do the same thing over and over expecting a different result.
DeleteRepublican's are lairs. They haven't always been as pure liars as they are now, but they've always been liars. Why do people still believe what they say?
We've seen so many cases of unnecessary brutality by these goons, that she should have known better than to try to take off. Too dangerous a move given their reprehensible behavior in the past.
ReplyDeleteLike every execution, the intent was to send a message.
ReplyDeleteThis was more than a murder. This was a lynching.
There is at least one video in which it’s clear that she hit the agent with her vehicle before he fired.
