Saturday fun activity: Where IS this?
Last week's contest was very satisfying, because the winner was really, really glad to win—a longtime reader who was into the spirit of the thing.
But this week's is going to be even more satisfying, because I'm finally going to stump you. I can just feel it. Because this place is so off the beaten track, yet so grand. I used to think I was the only person who knew about it.
Which is where I'll stop. No more hints. As much as I like getting rid of my limited edition, hand-set blog posters, so I don't feel quite so stupid for printing them up in the first place, I am going to savor stumping the Hive with this carved cockatiel and bear. The place looks huge, and is. But where is it? Post your guesses below, for all the good it'll do. I've got you now!
Postscript: I didn't. The location was identified, in the comments below. Maybe next week.

I think I've seen this at the Chicago Cultural Center, but that's just a guess - and probably a false memory.
ReplyDeleteNope. The Cultural Center's got those tile ceilings.
DeleteIn the dome I mean. I suppose in other places it has ceilings closer to this, but this isn't it.
DeleteLee Miglin's old apartment
ReplyDeleteFederal Reserve Bank Chicago?
ReplyDeleteNope.
ReplyDeleteEvery damn Saturday and we just keep coming back for more.
DeleteThe contest is more popular than the weekday columns. I should stop writing and just run pictures of odd places.
DeleteHotel Florence in Pullman?
ReplyDeletejohn
Nope.
DeletePalmer House?
ReplyDeleteNope.
DeleteUnlikely but given the avian theme... The Rookery?
ReplyDeleteNo, the Rookery's far prettier and more ... fin de siecle. This is kinda medieval.
DeleteSo, I guess it must be one of the many old castles scattered around the metro area, eh?
DeleteJohn
Exactly... Moor or less.
ReplyDeleteThe Riviera ... Uptown Theater ... The Aragon Ballroom ... one of our faded gems. ...you realize, of course, that guessing every old edifice before everyone else wakes up is my only shot here.
ReplyDeletePotter Palmer's old mansion?
ReplyDeleteConrad Hilton Hotel
ReplyDeleteLincoln Park Zoo
ReplyDeleteOne of the buildings that houses the animals.
The Cuneo Mansion? A halfhearted google search was, as always for me, fruitless. I did get to see a bunch of cool ceilings, though! I'll hang up now and wait for Dale's answer...
ReplyDeleteDark Yoda shoots into: 410 N. Michigan Avenue.
ReplyDeleteNope on all counts. I knew it. This is the one!
ReplyDeleteRookery
ReplyDeleteIntercontinental Hotel.
ReplyDeleteLet's see. Acorns. Oak. Bright modern lighting. Illuminating a stage, an art installation, The Bulls?
ReplyDeleteFrancis
Wild stab in the dark: Fourth Presbytarian Church on Michigan Avenue. Looks kinda Gothic.
ReplyDeleteCliff Dwellers Club headquarters (No chance but it is on the top floor)..... 850 North Lake Shore Dr., until recently owned by Northwestern University.
ReplyDeleteI wish (the Cliff Dwellers, that is). Nope on all accounts.
ReplyDeleteFrancis J Dewes House
ReplyDeleteDale
That red and blue ceiling! I've seen it! But wjere?
ReplyDeleteNope. Though with King Dale on the chase, I imagine the end is near.
ReplyDeleteThe Dawes Mansion in Evanston.
ReplyDeleteRoof coffering reminds me of Deering Library up at our ol' Alma Mater (NU). But I don't remember the carved figurines. Of course, I spent most of my study time up at Tech or over a greasy patty melt at Norris.
ReplyDeleteBob H
Is that a guess?
ReplyDeleteThe judges have conferred, and Bob H's tentative-yet-correct answer counts Yes, Deering LIbrary at Northwestern. Congratulations. Email me your address at dailysteinberg@gmail.com and I'll send you your prize.
ReplyDeleteCan't think of anything specific, though I've enjoyed looking at some lovely carved cockatiels on Google today. It looks like a museum, or a stage of some kind. This just may be the day we get stumped -- is there a deadline for guesses?
ReplyDeleteNeil, shave your beard and mustache and you'd look younger.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's good because ....?
Deleteyou'll look younger, the beard adds years
Delete...and the purpose of looking younger is....?
DeleteI feel sorry for Mr. Steinberg - this must be what it's like to be a Washington General.
ReplyDeleteMr, How about a guess the pic out in the suburbs now and then?
ReplyDelete(outside Evanston)
DeleteUGH .. I was just on campus this afternoon watching NU men's tennis beat Nebraska. But I had no chance on this one. I went to law school at Northwestern in Chicago but don't know the Evanston campus architecture too well.
ReplyDeleteI was glad to see King Dale had checked in, so I could stop wondering, then surprised when I googled Francis Dewes House and it did not seem likely that it was right. Also, there are certainly a lot of words written about this library on the web, and some pictures, but if there's another good photo of that cool coffered ceiling, I still haven't been able to find it. Much like Sandy looking at the carved cockatiels, my learning what a coffered ceiling was this morning was to no avail. The good thing is that I don't think I've been there. If I had, then I'd really be annoyed at not remembering it. : )
ReplyDeleteexcuses, excuses
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm late to the party. The New Regal Theater on 79th and Cottage Grove?
ReplyDeleteNo, it was gotten -- it's in the comments above. Deerling LIbrary at Northwestern University in Evanston. Lovely place.
