When I heard news of the shooting of Donald Trump on Saturday afternoon, my first thought was "Reichstag Fire." The 1933 arson of the German parliament that Hitler used as a pretext to suspend civil liberties. Not that Trump is in a position to do that, yet. But rather that this was a lucky wound, another stroke of good fortune for a man born with a horseshoe up his ass. The assassination attempt will be an excuse to eventually become the dictator he already intends to be. To play the martyr he already portrays himself in every breath. Trump gets rare confirmation in the physical world of his bone-deep belief that he is a victim. His followers, who already consider him to be Jesus on the Cross, find an actual nail to justify their passion. And the Democrats, already glumly backing an octogenarian who couldn't pretend to be focused for 10 minutes with everything on the line, now have another reason to go even limper as their bodies are swept over the falls. Our bodies.
That's the bad news. The good news is that today is July 16. Nov. 5 is still almost four months away. As we have just seen, anything is possible. I hope. But as I've said before, hope is the last coin in your pocket when all of your money is gone.

Five weeks until the DNC in Chicago, sixteen weeks until Election Day. And another horror yesterday. Never dreamed there could be a worse GOP V-P pick than Quayle, or Palin, or Pence. I was wrong.

He hates all minorities, he publicly said in a speech, he only likes Jews because they're good with his money, even though his own son-in-law is an Orthodox Jew & his daughter supposedly converted to marry that incompetent nepo baby & claims to be raising their children as Jews.
He really does admires Hitler, his first wife, said he kept a book of Hitler's speeches on his bedside table, uses his quotes repeatedly, loves Putin, Kim Jong Un, Modi, Xi, Orban & many other dictators. He can't stand democratically elected leaders of countries, like Trudeau, Macron & I'm sure he hates Keir Starmer, the UK's new prime minister & to make matters worse for the fat traitor, Starmer's wife is Jewish!
If the Democrats don't hammer home Vance's words against him, they they're even bigger & more useless, worthless wimps than they've been for the last 30 years!

DeleteFor nine years Trump has stoked hatred, fear, racism, Islamophobia, misogyny, cruelty and political violence. The only surprise is that this assassination attempt happened to him and still, like everything else—impeachments, indictments, guilty verdicts for crimes—he skates free—and comes back stronger than ever. The rest of us never win against him.
ReplyDeleteYesterday alone, we have lost the documents case in Florida because of corrupt Judge Cannon, and Trump named Vance as his VP candidate. Vance has little experience in any kind of leadership or governing and is an authoritarian, but he will manipulate Trump like a sock puppet. Republicans continue to demonize Biden and blame him for the shooting (it was one of their own!) while complaining that Biden in demonizing Trump. Biden had stopped his ads, taken down the billboards in Milwaukee, and stopped fundraising. Republicans have done of that.
And some foolish 20 year old boy was so deluded or sick of this, as half of this country is, that he did this and paid with his life. And made everything worse. Trump is going to win this election by that inch that saved him from death in Pennsylvania.
Never forget what Trump and the Republican Party has done to this country.
Vote. It is all we have left.
If I should be tempted to forgo voting for any reason short of death this fall, I will call to mind the TV picture of Trump pumping his closed fist and shouting some word beginning with an "f," that I had to endure 20 times over, as I hoped that 60 Minutes would actually come on as scheduled.

North Missitucky will go red for the third time in a row, and probably by double digits this time. A dollar stretches a lot farther than in Chicago, though. Which is good if you don't have that many of them.
But this state also has way too many Jethroes, and now it has given us a J.D. Vance. Oh, for joy. He's the real deal, if you're looking for a Trump Lite, and a young American Hitler. Many similarities to the original one.
These times are so bizarre in part because there are so many factors that go so far back in history -- a 2-party system that becomes more polarized by the day as we become more diverse in our population and values; an outdated electoral college that hardly ever reflects the popular vote; outrageous campaign costs and contributions that enable a Peter Thiel who donates enormous amounts of money that elect the most uncaring, self-centered, power infatuated human beings on the planet; gerrymandered legislative districts that render voting almost inconsequential; a compromised supreme court that has abdicated any sense of justice and respect for the rule of law; and guns -- not only more guns than people, but AR15 rifles that serve no rational civilian need ever under any circumstances. And all of this goes back to the Newt Gingrich days, hell, it goes back to the FDR opposition days, or maybe even post-civil war when slavery was eliminated in the law but never in the hearts of certain members of our population. I heard Ian Bremmer say on maybe Fareed's show recently that we may be the envy of other countries re our economics, but we aren't the envy of other countries re our dysfunctional democracy, which by the way, never truly functioned as an inclusive govt of the people, for the people, and by the people. It seems to have only semi-functioned when it was dominated by white males. James Baldwin said it best, "Not everything that is faced can be fixed, but nothing can be fixed until it is faced." We have a lousy track record for facing our own inadequacies as a country. And we're paying a horrible price for that! Oh, and I forgot the vitriol that Rush Limbaugh spewed forth for years, gathering millions and millions of faithful listeners, along with Fox News! What a joke!
