Readers offload bad feelings about immigrants

At the end of Monday's column on candidates stoking fear against immigrants, in a fit of madness, I made two requests.
First, these slurs are so general — someone somewhere doing something — that I invited xenophobic readers to send in specific stories of harm that actually happened to them, the real life incident that turned them against immigrants.
Then, impulsively, I asked readers who are not hot to deport millions of hard-working would-be Americans why they look upon immigration positively, despite the suffering immigrants' presence supposedly brings.
That second request was a last-minute afterthought, which is ironic, because the response ran 5-to-1 pro-immigrant.
The original idea was to present the pros and cons in one column. But given the massive response, I decided to run the "Immigrants Bad" responses today, and the "Immigrants Good" sampler on Friday.
Those opposed to immigration, as a rule, didn't understand the assignment — share something that actually happened to you — instead, like Tom Howard, regurgitating Fox News talking points. He came in hot:
"I dislike the immigrants who break our law entering our country while thousands of immigrants doing it the right way waiting in line!
"I dislike immigrants that enter illegally, who are taking over hotels and schools and disrupting American life.
"I dislike immigrants that enter illegally and are bringing diseases and death to innocent Americans."
There's more, but you get the idea. This passion for the rule of law —breathtaking, really — is a common thread.
What struck me is how readily the bile is ingested, then regurgitated back. Consider this, from Tony Zucchero, a perennial correspondent:
"We are Not Talking Legal Immigrants! We are talking about Criminal Illegal Aliens! You Ready, here we go! The Following are Facts! They are Raping, Murdering, Child Trafficking, Selling Drugs, Stealing, Beating, Robbing, Abusing American Citizens, Overwhelming Our Health Care System, Hospitals, Schools, Our Welfare System, Lowering Wages, They are Eating Our Pets, They are Taking Away Benefits, Housing and Medical from Our U.S Veterans, They are Raising the Cost of Insurance because they are Given Drivers Licenses Without the Requirements that American Citizens Have to go through to Obtain a Drivers License, Record Number of Automobile Accidents ..."

    1. Definitely. A bunch of Magat clowns. Xenophobic Tony foams at the mouth, and not only comes off as a flaming Trumpist glassbowl, but it's obvious he was absent (or asleep) when the rest of the class was learning about capitalization. Gimme a break...

Moronic Marc wants to ship the new arrivals to the emptiness of the West... the very same places that were being suggested for the Jews in the Thirties. Who knows? They might have turned someplace like sleepy little Vegas into the Tel Aviv of the New World. But there's that pesky drinking problem...that lack of hydration. Two words: NO WATER.

And then there's Sharp-eyed Steve...whose rant is the most ironic of them all, given that dozen-letter Polish surname. He's positive those guys are mostly Venezuelan. How? Do they wear little flag patches? Does he even know what their flag looks like? Can't help recalling how things really went to hell after we let all those damn Polacks in (just for the record, my grandfather was one of them).

Jamokes on parade. Thanks, Mr. S. Happy to know they were outnumbered, 5 to 1. Looking forward to hearing from the good people. Hopefully, millions just like them will stop fascism in its tracks in six more weeks, and there will be no pogroms here, in these Untied Snakes.

  2. Immigration is certainly an issue, one that is ongoing and requiring less heated attention. I wonder how one respondent knew the guys hanging around the Washington Library were Venezuelan. But what really jumped out at me was Donald Croker's use of the phrase "folks like you". Like whom? Liberals? Jews? Men? Columnists? Or the amorphous "you", kin to "they" and "them" .. unknown but really scary.

  3. To get really personal: in 1977, when I lived in an apartment on North Kenmore in a kind of slummy neighborhood, an oriental lady with a small precocious child moved into the building. I've been married to that (Korean) lady for about 45 years and the child, who has called me "Daddy" for all those years, just turned 50 and has 2 children, 10 and 8, who call me "Grandpa." Without those immigrants, I doubt that my life would have any meaning whatsoever.

    1. Forty-five years married...to a Korean lady. Mazel tov!
Guess you never got the memo. It's "Asian" now, rather than "oriental."

    2. Years ago an Asian woman kindly corrected me on the usage of that term. Oriental refers to things, like rugs or robes. Not people. She said that she didn’t care but some take offense to it.

    3. I think she's correct. It's too redolent of Suzy Wong and opium dens.

    4. In response to the above, the word Oriental is the opposite of Occidental, terms that since the division of the Roman Empire divide the East from the West. The problem today is that the term is too generic and classifies anyone of Asian descent as belonging to one class. Are you French, German, Italian, Greek, Spanish, on and on....or are you Chinese, Korean, Thai, Lao, Japanese, on and on...? Do you identify as Occidental. I doubt it. Thus the disuse of Orienal. I rest my case.

  4. Off topic but just an FYI. While trying to read the rest of today's EGD column, I got this message in a big square box: "We are so glad you stay informed with the Chicago Sun-Times!" Then I either have to watch a 30 second video to access this article OR Donate Now. I've never had this happen before.
Anybody else get this message? I already give monthly to WBEZ and have for years. Not sure what changed but if you can give me some insight, I'd really appreciate it.

    1. I wish I could, but no one tells me anything. I assume they're increasingly frantic to keep the money coming in and the lights on. Though you should watch the video — it starts with a bang.

    2. I've gotten that message and watched the video several times, with diminishing interest, needless to say. Though it's always a treat to see our EGD host start things off.

It seems to be a disconcerting fact of life that organizations find it easier to get MORE money from folks who already give them money than it is for them to get ANY money from those who are not subscribers / members / donors, or whatever. They seem to have cut back lately, but, already having ponied up, we used to get more mail from WTTW than from anybody else.

So, as a Sun-Times subscriber, I'm far from pleased about being forced to watch the video, but I understand why they do it. I just wonder how successful the tactic has been.

    3. Thanks Neil! So YOU were the "big bang" at the beginning of the video. Glad I watched it. If that's what it takes to read EGD, so be it. It's a small price to pay and well worth it.

  5. Thanks for illuminating the reality that few can cite a personal harm they’ve experienced. Hate is rarely rational.

  6. Some of the negative comments come straight from FOX News. (Owned by a immigrant Australian I believe). Three years ago I took a month road trip through the Southeast and was surprised to see FOX News on in every Hotel breakfast room we stopped at. This is the most watched news program as far as I know, although mildly intelligent people know it's an entertainment program and not news. But from a business perspective I was surprised to see this garbage on every TV. Do the people running the hotels think there are no Democrats staying there or people on vacation that just want to get away from that. So I guess my point is a lot of people watching that garbage and believing it. I see it everywhere. Usually when someone quotes something really stupid I know what they're news source is. And I believe that's a big part of where we are today.

  7. For that kind of email barrage, I'd suggest bleach. On the keyboard, on the monitor.

Hell, gargle it if it wards off COVID! (Jk, feet gawd sake)
