Saturday fun activity: Where IS this?

Not every column idea comes together. Sometimes you do the legwork, poke and prod, ask and analyze, and the story for some reason just doesn't gel. I went to this place hoping to find whatever ineffable thing makes for a good story, and came up short. The fault was
La-Dee-Das
entirely my own. My host was honest and pleasant, her story interesting, and I returned a second time, hoping to make it work. But it just didn't. Happens. Though this place is off the beaten track, and I thought: At least it might stump the hive, for a while.

Where are these intriguing comestibles being made? After it's guessed — and it always is —I'll fill you in a bit on the place, and how you go there and partake of the wonderful products manufactured within. The winner receives one of my endless supply of 2015 blog posters. Place your guesses below. Good luck.

  1. I have no idea where this place is, but it reminds me of a little store inside the H-Mart store in Niles that sells what they call hoju bang, a pastry made from walnuts that they bake on the premises. Next time, Neil, when you go to the jimjimbang (King Spa), take a stroll through H-Mart -- hoju bang isn't the only attraction, I assure you.

    1. I've been to the H-Mart -- like shopping in Tokyo. And that Filipino ice cream shop across the street is one of my favorite spots.

    2. Never noticed it and I've been to H-Mart at least a hundred times since it opened a few years ago. I guess that's why I'm shuffling papers on the South Side and you're gallivanting around the world tasting its delights.

  2. Isn't that the company in West Town that makes the toffee that ends up in the goodie bags at the Oscars?

    1. No, that's Terry's Toffee -- I've been there too, good stuff. But this is somewhere different.

    1. And cheated well at that. Yes, the woman above, making candy, is Chris Kadow-Dougherty, founder of Whimsical Candy. There just aren't that many independent candy companies in the Loop anymore, and I had to investigate. When my wife tried one of her raspberry-filled candy bars, she said, and I quote: "This is the best fucking candy bar I ever ate in my life." I'll tuck one of her La-Di-Das, the caramel roll-ups pictured above, into your poster tube. Email your address to me at dailysteinberg@gmail.com and I'll send you your prize. Congratulations.

  4. Well, it certainly pays to win the right contest! I'll bet the person who guessed the concrete company photo didn't receive (or want) a free chip of concrete! ; )

  5. @Neil, 10.25 a.m. I wonder if it has a website. Off topic, I woke up to a football show called "ACC Blitz" where one of the hosts is fond of using the word "Dadgum." My question is this: Would you consider renaming your blog, "Every Dadgum Day"?
