Noem's fear roadshow plays a date downstate

Barbara Kruger, Art Institute of Chicago

If you could be exiled from your home forever for a speeding ticket, how fast would you drive? If the slightest brush with the law might result in you being torn from your family and sent to a country you last saw when you were 2, how cautiously would you go about your day?
I mention this because, in the first draft of this column, I began with the hard statistics demonstrating that immigrants, as a group, are more law-abiding than citizens born in the United States. It just makes sense; they have to be.
But numbers are cold, while stories sizzle.
This is not to suggest immigrants never commit crimes. Awful crimes. They do. They are, after all, still human beings — that privilege has not been snatched away from them, yet. Though according to the script we're following, that is coming next.
But one example — or three — is proof of nothing. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is oblivious to that, and hopes you are too. She brought her Immigrants = Criminals Tour roadshow to Springfield Wednesday to complain about our state's policy of not helping federal immigration officers randomly pluck immigrants off the street and ship them to foreign countries to suffer fates unknown for the crime of not having their paperwork in order. Or having their paperwork in order and being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“People are dying every day because of these policies. People are evading justice,” Noem told reporters during a news conference near the scene of a murder committed, allegedly, by an immigrant. As if "evading justice" weren't a contender for a chapter heading summarizing our current political nadir in some future history textbook. "Evading Justice — America in the era of blatant official criminality, 2025 — 2029."
Assuming we have accurate history books, which right now is no sure bet.
Noem went on to fire off the administration blunderbuss of false invective.
“Governors like JB Pritzker don’t care if gangbangers, murderers, rapists and pedophiles roam free in his state," she said.
Initially, I grabbed a handful of statistics to throw back. How immigrants are 60 percent less likely to wind up in jail than citizens born here. But figures are complicated, when you dwell in the world of fact, there are many asterisks — the figure could be 30%. Or 40%.

That's why so many Americans prefer to live in fantasyland of lies — truth is complicated. Life is so simple when you can just make it up.

  2. She’s another in his line of scary Satanic Fembot Barbies with the fabulous long wavy hair. (Seriously, nearly every female in his administration — and his personal life — has the same look. Exceptions are White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Secretary of Education Linda McMahon.)
Kristi Barbie comes with a gun, her little dog Cricket, and a goat so girls can practice shooting innocent, defenseless creatures.

  3. Border Patrol Barbie also has made a TV ad in which she praises the fat fascist traitor for his executive orders banning immigrants, which is actually a multi-million dollar campaign ad for herself to run for president in 2028! She's had her hair professionally done for the ad, flowing in the wind!

  4. Thank you for standing up to senseless policy and heartless hypocrisy, and standing up for our immigrant neighbors, friends, and families.

  5. Also, good column in the ST today from S.E. Cupp, something along these lines and spot on.

  6. As soon as I hear her voice on the TV, I grab the remote and hit the "mute" button. I wish someone would investigate to find out how much money we're paying for those commercials, which are nothing but propaganda. After all, if Noem really wanted to communicate with undocumented immigrants, she would not be speaking in English.

    1. as soon as her commercial comes on I shut off the tv or switch the channel, hoping others are doing the same, and the station will notice. it's futile, but makes me feel better.

  7. Immediately recognized the photos.I've been keeping my small collection of Barbara Kruger posters from my lawn out of fear of retaliatory vandalism since Trump came on the scene and the "free speech only for me" folks crawled out ...

  8. I think the Dunning–Kruger effect an outweighed effect on our society. Too many people claim to be an expert on things yet they rely on a stupid slogan to sell them. "Make America Great Again" has never been anything other than a saying.

It drove me crazy when people asked Hilary Clinton how she would tackle an issue and she would replay and then say "i have a whole plan in place, you can read it at my website." and everyone would lose their minds.

Life is really complicated. Governing makes life look like a walk in the park. And stupid people see the complication and say "i don't get that so it must be wrong. this guy is going to make things great again, i want that."

Anyone who is against immigration or immigrants are either racist or unable to understand how society works. It's clear to me that the right either doesn't understand society or is purposely lying. Either way i consider it treason.

And lastly, anyone who would kill a pet is worthless. There are no words or terms in the English language to describe someone who both kills their pet and then brags about it.

  9. Maybe the most unqualified of all the picks riding in the Felonious clown car. The Dog Eliminator isn't even fit to work at a kiosk in a mall, Looks more like a Bratz doll than a Barbie doll, but that's what the Orange Guy likes. He hires females for their appearance, not for their ability. And she has That Look.

Has anyone even given her a heads-up about those locks? She either needs to lose the wig, or cut the hair. LEOs of both sexes do not wear their hair long, for obvious reasons. Still wouldn't help her credibility, though. Can't stand to look at her. She is the New Order personified.

  10. It's easy to poke fun at Kristi Noem (and I'm not suggesting that we refrain from doing so) because she is simply one in an endless procession of officials who were nominated on the basis of their looks rather than their qualifications -- otherwise her bizarre woof-woof-bang history would have gotten her disqualified in the first pass.

Look anywhere in the administration and you'll find an assortment of mostly semi-attractive females, mostly long hair, mostly blond, occupying government posts, spokesperson positions, legal positions (at least a law license requires serious work), pretty much any job in the public view.

Occasionally the job requires a tougher look: Pete Hegseth sort of resembles the ex-National Guard officer that he was, accepted as Secretary of Defense after promising that he would not drink so much while in office, and tough-guy border czar Tom Homan resembles an angry potato, but otherwise it would appear that having a TV-friendly face, saying things that the president likes to hear, is all that's required.

  13. What I found especially appalling about Noem's visit to Springfield is that she stood in front of Emma Shafer's home to make her propaganda speech, against the request and pleas of Emma's family and friends. Emma was killed by her ex-boyfriend, who was an immigrant. Emma was also a community activist who spoke up for immigrants. Her parents begged Noem to please stop. Her friends honked car horns and shouted in protest in an effort to drown out Noem's words or disrupt her propaganda tour. How especially vile it is to disrespect the victim of domestic violence in this way. Her parents said they were heartbroken by the exploitation.

  14. Noem was wound up to speechify, using those horrifying and despicable words. She could no more deviate from the vitriol prescribed for her to say than your pet parrot can decide not to make the sounds you've trained it to make. Beware! Next, your kid will be coming home from school with similarly nasty little speeches.

  15. Yes statistics can be a challenge to accurately tabulate for the undocumented population by its very definition.

People have been deported from the US for decades. The current inept/criminal administration is taking a questionable tact - little or no due process- to frighten people into self deportation.

previous administrations have repatriated migrants in huge numbers. Bigger than the first inept trump administration . The statistics are staggering. Even though the democrats were more effective in sending people back to their country of origin, people were pouring in resulting in a net increase in undocumented residents.

As far as reasons for expelling people, previous administrations used criminal history as a factor but not the sole factor. If you overstay your visa, enter illegally or arrive and ask for asylum and its denied you can be sent back. If while you are here attempting to be allowed to stay you do not follow the rules you can be asked to leave. Many have been and many are. Deportation is not simply about criminal behavior.

I agree that concentrating on sending the criminals out as a priority is good policy. If they are indeed criminals and its been proven in court. Lets say for the sake of argument there are 10,000,000 undocumented people in the US and 2.3% of them have been convicted of a crimes . thats 233,000 people . This administration hasn't deported a fraction of that number.

You sometimes use a statement ,` to paraphrase . If someone brakes into your house and is trashing the place should you not resist? Just because we dislike the current president so much and they have probably made some egregious mistakes deporting some migrants are none of them criminals? Should none of them be sent home. Or is this just partisan bullshit across the board?
