Saturday fun activity: Where IS this?

I am not, as a rule, a fan of modern, non-representational art.
     Especially public sculpture.
And I'm not exactly a fan of this pair of pyramids interrupted with a ... sort of an aqua skeletal ball.
But it stopped me enough to look at it. And I guess I could say I disliked it less than I usually dislike a thing like this. It had a certain suddenness I appreciated.
Or maybe I was just glad for a suitable Saturday mystery photo. A bit off the beaten track, as it were. At least my beaten track. You might walk by it every day.
Anyway, the question is not its aesthetic value or lack of same, but where in Chicago it is located. Do you know? Have you any idea? If so, place your guess below. The winner will receive one of my high quality 2015 blog posters.

  1. The sculpture is at The University of Ilinois Chicago, in front of the Molecular Biology Building, 900 South Ashland Avenue. It is called, "Symbiotic Parralax", by Terrence Karpowicz.

  2. Well, sorry to disappoint anyone who is now looking at a puzzle which has already been solved. So here is my own challenge to you, see if you can figure out the location of this photo. I'm not offering any bling to the winner other then my acknowledgment that you are an expert in Chicago History, par excellence. Neil, please feel free to try your hand at guessing the location. A moderately skilled genealogist can easily discover the family's address, from the 1910 census. If you post that, it will get people near the ballpark.

    1. I have no idea where the baseball team photo is, but the church in the accompanying photo looks like St. James of the Sag Channel, or whatever it's called. With no prize offered, that's all the effort I'm going to! ; ) And nice job on your win today. I figured that could well be UIC, but if I've seen that sculpture, I don't remember it. I think Neil's artistic review is about right.

  3. I went to graduate school there at UIC the mid 80's but things sure look different in that photo.
    Do recall Halstead St. better.

    1. It would be even better if you recalled how to spell Halsted St. correctly.

    2. it might be better if people consider it might be a typing error, not a spelling error, and in any event, didn't go, cranky to comment

    1. Congratulations, Bill! Here is a documented photo of the same location. The Jane Addam's Hull House was a complex of buildings on Polk Street, west of Halsted. Located approximately one mile east of Neil's photo, but 112 years in the past. The Marshal Sweenie playground was one of the first playgrounds build in Chicago.

    2. Oh yes, the Hull house, or what was left at it. was a great place to visit back in the 80's. What a great History that place had and what a lot of good it did to those early days immigrants.
