Saturday fun activity: Where IS this?

Can you guess a location by its pie? I bet you can, especially when the hint is this trio of triangular beauties. The doughnut fad is a few years old, and the cupcake bubble has popped. But pie continues on, timeless as America, holding up the tail end of the classic evocation of all we hold dear, "baseball, mom and apple pie." (Though, ironically, apple pie has fallen out of favor with me. As a young man, I adored it, particularly Dutch apple, with that mound of crumbly stuff on it. Now it just seems sweet, cloying. My favorites are sour cherry, blueberry, lemon meringue and chocolate. Not that it matters).
But enough throat-clearing. Where, oh where, can you find these pies? My guess is the puzzle doesn't last five minutes, but I'm posting it anywhere because a) I like the picture, with its assemblage of forks, just ready for a mass pie appreciation. And b) I'm hoping to alert people to its presence, because one must encourage good pie. The winner gets one of my actually-dwindling-now-that-I'm-slapping-them-up-on-walls stock of 2015 blog posters, a story that I will relate to you another day. Place your guesses below. Good luck.

Postscript: Since it's been solved, another view, though I won't reveal where — it's in the comments — for those who want to challenge themselves to guess. Quite a beautiful place.

    1. Hmm... can you be more specific? There are two.

    2. While not an exact location—there are two—this isn't Jeopardy, so if you'd like a poster, email me your address at dailysteinberg@gmail.com.

  2. I have no idea where this is. But, my favorite pie is key lime followed by strawberry rhubarb. In the past week had a slice of each.

    1. Key lime rocks. Strawberry rhubarb, not so much. To me. But my wife adores it.

  3. Mmmmmmm pie. My absolute favorite is the chocolate pie my mom makes during the holidays. Key lime is delicious, and it's my sons fave. He doesn't like cake much so we do birthday pie. Ever have Clinch Mountain vinegar pie? Yum. Now I'm going to have to make a pie tonight.

    1. Vinegar pie? Is that a Rocky Mountains thing? I'll stick with rhubarb or lemon.

Figured Baker's Square wouldn't be the answer.

These tempting pics are ruining my diet.

  6. The judge's decision is final, of course, but it seems a little hard on Peter to let someone else win because they came up with the correct location, possibly after Googling and guessing, possibly before Peter had a chance to check back in.

Key lime is my favorite (actually had a few bites off my husband's plate last night), but I have to give a shout-out to pecan.

    1. I had that thought, after the judges conferred, and if Peter wants to claim a prize, he may.

  7. Tart cherry pie is the best, end of discussion. Michigan tart cherries are the best, end of discussion, Want to know why you can only buy canned tart cherries from Oregon? Government regulation, I hope you're happy with that.

    1. Why is that a gov't regulation, Bernie? But some regulation is needed from the gov't, especially in the food industry. End of discussion.

I can tell by your stilted syntax, you are from Oregon! Think you're so tough, with your fancy pants lobbyist? Mark my words and mark them well, day will come when Americans start voting for a class of politicians that will put their fingers in their ears and say lalalalala, when they see a lobbyist approaching. Then people will have to make a choice, albeit an easy one. Your mushy, pale, stinky cherries, that require gobs of red dye number 2 to look remotely palatable, will sit on the grocery shelf un-purchased. Tasty, firm, naturally red Michigan cherries, will become widely available. Connoisseurs of delectable sour cherry pastries and pies, coast to coast will rejoice with the improvement. Why we may have a product worthy of export. People worldwide will love America again, then I'll be happy.

    3. MI tart cherries are the best, when the crop is good. Weak years, businesses have been known to order cherries from Poland to keep the stock up, but they still stay away from Oregon's crop.

  8. Weird. I was just thinking this morning about going to Hoosier Mama. Been meaning to try it for ages, and since I moved it's just a few blocks away. Then I happened to think of you, and came to your page, which I haven't done in a long time (sorry...life, you know). And there it is! I'd say it's a definite sign that I should go eat some pie. Now the only problem will be in the choosing.

  10. I'm a lemon tart fan, so I really like lemon meringue pie. Also key lime, some fruit pies, pumpkin and chocolate. My husband loves pecan pie but IMO it's way too sweet (cloying is a good word). My son goes for pumpkin pie.

    1. I agree that the gooey, gelatinous base of a pecan pie can sometimes be a problem, both texture-wise and sweetness-wise, Sandy. But if they throw a bunch of chocolate in there, that solves both problems nicely! ; )

    2. Yeah, maybe a little less corn syrup, then add some chocolate chips :)

  11. Sour cherry. Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner! I think I'd go with pecan second. Key lime is in there somewhere, but I've never really liked the all-American apple. If that honey is from Ellis Family Farms, which it looks like it might be, though I can't tell, we have some in our cupboard...

Hoosier Mama... Swell pie, brilliant name!

  12. That does look like a nice, old fashioned/quaint shop.
