Sunday Puzzler No. 3
Last week was elegant but not hard.
This is less elegant but, I hope, harder.
Though doable.
I think.
Good luck.
Have fun.
The winner gets a 2015 EGDD blog poster.
Post your guesses below.
Two thousand fifteen years ago
Using our system
Not that they would then
But only two digits
Plus the Latin, abbreviated
And
John Candy and Judy Holiday
Had this in common
All together now, a kind of code
Plus
He preferred being an unhappy fellow
To being a porker smiling in shit
Not that he was given the choice.
Where is this?

Rahm is doing a lot of traveling on the taxpayer's dime.

ReplyDeleteInvasion of Britain by emperor Claudius?
ReplyDeleteThe Coliseum in Rome -- purely a guess LOL.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm guessing Richborough in Kent, England, which is not even a half-assed guess, as I don't get the first part or the significance of the unhappy fellow. It does bear the feature of including one of your son's names, though, which is at least a coincidence, since you said that some of these puzzles were originally created for your sons' amusement.

ReplyDeleteC'mon Hive, what's with this shot-in-the-dark guessing? This has to be figured out. That's the point. To be honest, if you crack the last part you can guess the first part fairly easily. This is a 4 on the cipher scale.
ReplyDeleteAll right, 00AD43 is the "hex value" of the color green. The Chicago River? That's all I got. Has nothing to do with an unhappy fellow, of course. Apologies that as a drone in the hive, I'm not up to a less-than-middling cipher challenge. I like the new versions of Sherlock Holmes well enough. Alas, I'm evidently more like Nigel Bruce's Watson than either Martin Freeman's or Lucy Liu's. : )
DeleteThe Hive is calling for more worker bees! I do like the ciphers though.
DeleteJakash certainly moved the ball. The last part, well, remember I design it so you can't just plug the words into Google and solve them. But you can process them. You have to be philosophical about it.
ReplyDeleteSocrates School?
ReplyDeleteNikki D.
The Green Mill?
ReplyDeleteUh, 4802 N. Broadway Ave., Chicago, to be more precise...
DeleteYes! You got it, Jakash. The first part delineated the Pantone code for green. The second, a paraphrase of John Stuart Mill's classic observation, "It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, is of a different opinion, it is only because they only know their own side of the question.”
ReplyDeleteSend me your address and I'll send you your poster. Unless you have one already. I still have lots of coffee.
I guess multiple guesses aren't disqualifying, then. ; ) I'll certainly be happy to receive one of the swell, limited-edition posters! Thanks for the contest and the clues, Neil. Upon further review, I have to admit that my earlier "shots-in-the-dark" were ridiculous and did not even begin to conform to the parameters of the puzzle. Alas, I'd have done better in recognizing that quote 30 years ago. I'm just lucky that the likes of Mr. Evans or Mr. Savage evidently didn't check in today...
